Dit bijzondere concert staat bol van de levenslust! Het is veelzijdig, zelfs een beetje brutaal. Rietkwintet Calefax gaat met dit programma de straat op. Streetwise heet het. Er klinkt muziek van straatmuzikanten als de 17e-eeuwse Jacob van Eyck en de 20e-eeuwse Moondog. En het roerige stadsleven wordt uitgebeeld door George Gershwin en Joe Jackson.
Zwoele zomeravonden
Er valt wat te beleven op straat. Zo kon je in de jaren veertig van de 17e eeuw op zwoele zomeravonden de blinde Jacob van Eyck aantreffen, virtuoos blokfluit spelend op het Janskerkhof in Utrecht. Verdiende hij nog een aardige duit mee. Drie eeuwen later was Moondog, op Sixth Avenue in New York, een vaste bezienswaardigheid. Daar, tussen 52nd en 55th Street, stond de blinde dagelijks: cape omgeslagen, staf in de hand, Vikinghelm met horens op zijn hoofd, bedelend, lp’s verkopend en poëzie voordragend. Niemand die in de gaten had dat hij thuis heel bijzondere muziek componeerde – jazzy, minimalistisch, sterk ritmisch – die nog van grote invloed zou zijn op Steve Reich en Philip Glass.
Parijs
De straten van Parijs verkennen doet Gershwins An American in Paris. De Amerikaan – Gershwin zelf? Hij was net in Parijs geweest – kijkt verwonderd rond in de wereldstad. En luistert rond: overal autogetoeter. Gershwin liet voor de première in Carnegie Hall in New York speciaal vier van zulke claxons overkomen. An American in Paris is een prachtige evocatie van de ‘Années folles’, de Franse variant van de Roaring twenties. En Gershwins meest ambitieuze orkestwerk, dat ook met vijf blazers prachtig klinkt. Speciaal voor dit programma werkt Calefax samen met choreograaf Sanne van der Put voor een geënsceneerde interpretatie van An American in Paris
‘Selfmade’
‘Streetwise’. Betekent ook ‘selfmade’. Daarom is er ook muziek van Georg Philipp Telemann, de man die van zijn moederrechten moest studeren maar die zó voor de muziek leefde dat hij wel moest componeren. Telemann ‘ademde’ muziek: hij was productiever dan Bach en Händel samen en was in zijn tijd geliefder dan zijn beroemde generatiegenoten.

This special concert is full of zest for life! It is versatile, even a little cheeky. Reed Quintet Calefax ’takes the streets’ with this program. Streetwise is what it is called. Music by street musicians like the 17th-century Jacob van Eyck and the 20th-century Moondog will be heard. A stirring city life is depicted by George Gershwin and Joe Jackson.
Sultry summer evenings
There is something to be seen down the city streets. For example, on sultry summer evenings in the 1940s you could find the blind Jacob van Eyck playing the recorder virtuoso on the Janskerkhof in Utrecht. He still made a pretty penny. Three centuries later, Moondog, on Sixth Avenue in New York, was a regular attraction. There, between 52nd and 55th Street, the blind man stood every day: cape wrapped, staff in hand, Viking helmet with horns on his head, begging, selling records and reciting poetry. No one noticed that he was composing very special music at home – jazzy, minimalist, strongly rhythmic – that would go on to be a major influence on Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
Paris
Exploring the streets of Paris is what Gershwin’s An American in Paris does. The American – Gershwin himself? He had just been to Paris – gazes around the metropolis in amazement. And listens all around: car horns everywhere. Gershwin had four such horns specially flown over for the premiere at Carnegie Hall in New York. An American in Paris is a wonderful evocation of the ‘Années folles,’ the French version of the Roaring twenties. And Gershwin’s most ambitious orchestral work, which sounds wonderful even with five horns. Especially for this program, Calefax collaborates with choreographer Sanne van der Put for a staged interpretation of An American in Paris.
‘Selfmade’
‘Streetwise’. Also means ‘self-made’. That is why there is music by Georg Philipp Telemann, who’s mother made him study law lived for music, so he had to compose. Telemann ‘breathed’ music: he was more productive than Bach and Handel combined and was more beloved in his time than his famous contemporaries.
