‘Onze eigen’ Bariton Thomas Oliemans keert in het seizoen 2024-25 terug naar ‘The Met ’(The Metropolitan Opera) in New York, in de reprise van Simon McBurneys versie van Mozarts Die Zauberföte. Oliemans gooide zeer hoge ogen met zijn rol als Papageno in deze productie, die over de hele wereld te zien was – waaronder dus in New York -, maar die bij onze eigen De Nationale Opera is gecreëerd. ‘Thomas Oliemans, with his cheery air, adorable stubbornness and rambunctious […] baritone, was a singular Papageno’, schreef de New York Times jubelend.
Dat Oliemans niet alleen een geliefd operazanger is, bewees hij maar weer eens met zijn indringende Winterreise op 2 maart 2024 in de Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden. Oliemans is een van de beste Liedzangers van Nederland. Dat smaakt naar meer, dus vroegen we hem dit seizoen Schuberts Schwanengesang te komen zingen. Daarbij laat hij zich wederom begeleiden door Paolo Giacometti, een Nederlandse pianist van Italiaanse origine en kind aan huis bij ons in de Stadsgehoorzaal. Als solist wordt hij alom geroemd en als begeleider van zangers, violisten en cellisten behoort hij tot de absolute wereldtop.
Schuberts Schwanengesang
Schuberts Schwanengesang is een bundel van dertien liederen die Schubert in een korte tijd vlak voor zijn dood achter elkaar componeerde. Een echte zwanenzang dus. Anders dan bij Die Winterreise en Die schöne Müllerin zijn de teksten niet van één dichter: Schubert koos gedichten van Heinrich Heine, Ludwig Rellstab en Johann Gabriel Seidl. Het is dan ook de vraag of Schubert een liedcyclus voor ogen had, of losse liederen componeerde. Toch voelt de bundel als één geheel. Schubert voelde zijn einde naderen. De componist voor wie geen schoonheid kon bestaan zonder melancholie, geen vreugde zonder nostalgie, bewaarde zijn mooiste noten voor het laatst.
Fantasie in f
Dat Thomas Oliemans een uitstekend pianist is, is een publiek geheim. Daarom neemt de zanger na zijn Schwanengesang plaats naast Paolo Giacometti om Schuberts Fantasie in f voor piano vier handen te spelen. Dat prachtige monumentale pianowerk is misschien wel het beste stuk dat ooit voor vier handen gecomponeerd is: lyrisch, zangerig en bitterzoet.

‘Our very own’ baritone Thomas Oliemans will return to ‘The Met’ (The Metropolitan Opera) in New York in the 2024-25 season, in the revival of Simon McBurney’s version of Mozart’s Die Zauberföte. Schuberts Schwanensang
Schubert’s Schwanengesang is a collection of thirteen songs that Schubert composed one after the other in a short time just before his death. A true swan song, in other words. Unlike Die Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin, the texts are not written by a single poet: Schubert chose poems by Heinrich Heine, Ludwig Rellstab and Johann Gabriel Seidl. It is therefore questionable whether Schubert had a song cycle in mind, or composed Schwanengesang as a collection of individual songs. Nevertheless, the collection feels like a whole. Schubert felt his end was approaching. The composer for whom no beauty could exist without melancholy, no joy without nostalgia, saved his most beautiful notes for last.
Fantasy in F minor
It is an open secret that Thomas Oliemans is not only an outstanding singer, but also an excellent pianist. That is why, after performing Schwanengesang, the singer will sit down next to Paolo Giacometti to play Schubert’s Fantasy in F minor for piano four hands. This magnificent monumental piano work is perhaps the best piece ever composed for four hands: lyrical, lilting and bittersweet.
