Na het grote Brahmsproject richt de kersverse dr. Johannes Leertouwer zijn pijlen op de muziek van Robert Schumann.

Hoe klonk de muziek van de componisten van wie we zo houden en die we zo goed denken te kennen eigenlijk toen die net gecomponeerd was? Het lijkt een eenvoudige vraag, zelfs een beetje een open deur. Maar die vraag blijkt enorm veel nieuwe vragen op te werpen: van welk hout waren de dwarsfluiten toen gesneden? Speelden ze op natuurhoorns of op ventielhoorns? Hielden ze een strak tempo aan, of was het juist vloeiend?
Dirigent en violist Johannes Leertouwer stort zich na een jarenlang Brahms-project dat hem een doctorstitel opleverde, nu helemaal op de muziek van Schumann. En die kan dat wel gebruiken. Want ook al zijn de symfonieën van Schumann zeer geliefd, moderne critici klagen nogal eens over een gebrek aan balans tussen de instrumenten. Het zou heel goed kunnen dat dat alles te maken heeft met het instrumentarium dat tegenwoordig gebruikt wordt. Leertouwers
Brahmsproject leverde opzienbarende resultaten en zeer interessante concerten op. Dat belooft wat voor de muziek van Schumann, de componist waar Brahms zo tegen opkeek.
Schumanns tweede symfonie
De tweede symfonie was het eerste grootschalige werk dat Schumann schreef nadat een zenuwinzinking een periode van zware depressie inleidde. Een jaar lang schreef hij niets, muziek luisteren was hem een kwelling. Maar de muziek van Bach hielp hem er bovenop. Bach is dan ook erg aanwezig in de tweede symfonie. Het schrijven van de symfonie had een therapeutische werking. Het werken aan de eerste delen was nog een gevecht tegen zijn gemoed, bij het vierde deel voelde Schumann zich al beter en bij de voltooing van de symfonie was hij weer helemaal de oude. Muziektherapie dus, deze symfonie. Zou het bij ons ook werken?

What did the music of the composers we love so much and think we know so well actually sound like when it was just composed? It seems to be a simple question, even a bit of a cliche. But this question raises a huge number of new questions: what type of wood were flutes made of back then? Did they play on natural or valve horns? Did they keep a strict tempo, or was it fluid?
Conductor and violinist Johannes Leertouwer, after a year-long Brahms project that earned him a doctoral degree, is now dedicating himself entirely to Schumann’s music. And he could use it. Because even though Schumann’s symphonies are much loved, modern critics often complain about a lack of balance between the instruments. It could well be that this has everything to do with the instrumentation used today. Leertouwer’s Brahms project produced startling results and very interesting concerts. That bodes well for the music of Schumann, the composer Brahms looked up to so much.
Schumann’s Second Symphony
The Second Symphony was the first large-scale work Schumann wrote after a nervous breakdown led to a period of severe depression. For a year he wrote nothing, listening to music felt like torture to him. But the music of Bach helped him recover. Bach is therefore very much present in the second symphony. Writing the symphony had a therapeutic effect. Working on the first movements was still a battle against his mood. But by the time he reached the fourth movement, Schumann was already feeling better and when he completed the symphony, he had regained his health. Writing this symphony thus functioned as music therapy for Schumann. Would it have the same effect on its audiences?
