De zoektocht naar een nieuwe viool als inspiratie
Het is een proces waar iedere musicus meerdere keren in zijn carrière mee te maken krijgt: de zoektocht naar een nieuw instrument. Violist Joseph Puglia moest in 2021, midden tijdens de coronacrisis, op zoek naar een ‘nieuw’ instrument. Hij probeerde meer dan 80 violen uit, elk met een eigen karakter en klankwereld. Door de coronarestricties was het moeilijk om met collega-musici samen te spelen, en dit inspireerde hem om zich te verdiepen in repertoire voor viool solo: slechts 1 viool alleen. Puglia, die als concertviolist zeer thuis is in het hedendaagse repertoire, liet speciaal voor dit project muziek componeren door verschillende componisten. Hierbij zocht hij samen met de componisten de grenzen op van zijn viooltechniek en experimenteerden ze met de variëteit aan klanken die een viool kan voortbrengen. Het resultaat van deze experimenten: onder andere het bespelen van een viool met Chinese stokjes, of het vasthouden van de viool op schoot.
Bijvangst of niet, de zoektocht van Puglia naar een nieuw instrument leidde tot een bonte verzameling nieuwe werken voor viool solo, die hij samen met Bachs fameuze 2e Partita uitvoert onder de noemer Voices of a Violin. Tijdens dit concert zal Puglia toepasselijk spelen op zijn ‘nieuwe’ viool: een Italiaans instrument gemaakt door Anselmo Bellioso in 1773.

Joseph Puglia is een Amerikaanse in Nederland woonachtige violist. Hij studeerde aan de Juilliard School of Music in New York en het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. In 2009 maakte hij zijn solodebuut in de grote zaal van het Concertgebouw, waar hij het vioolconcert van John Adams uitvoerde met Asko|Schönberg onder leiding van Reinbert de Leeuw. Puglia geeft concerten in binnen- en buitenland en is regelmatig te horen als concertmeester van Asko|Schönberg, Ensemble Intercontemporain en het Nederlands Kamerorkest.

Inspired by the search for a new violin
It is a process that every musician faces several times in their career: the search for a new instrument. Violinist Joseph Puglia had to search for a ‘new’ instrument in 2021, in the middle of the covid pandemic. He tried out more than 80 violins, each with its own character and soundscape. The covid restrictions made it difficult to play with other musicians, and this inspired him to delve into the repertoire for violin solo: just 1 violin alone. Puglia, who as a concert violinist feels very much at home in the contemporary repertoire, asked several composers to compose new pieces especially for this project. In doing so, he and the composers explored the limits of his violin technique and experimented with the variety of sounds a violin can produce. The results of these experiments: amongst others, playing a violin with Chinese sticks, or holding the violin on his lap while playing.
By-product or not, Puglia’s search for a new instrument led to a colourful collection of new works for solo violin, which he will perform together with Bach’s famous second Partita for solo violin under the title Voices of a Violin. During this concert, Puglia will appropriately play on his ‘new’ violin: a beautiful Italian instrument made by Anselmo Bellioso in 1773.
Joseph Puglia
Joseph Puglia is an American violinist based in the Netherlands. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. In 2009, he made his solo debut in the Main Hall of the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, performing John Adams’ violin concerto with Asko|Schönberg conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw. Puglia plays concerts both in The Netherlands and abroad and is regularly invited as concertmaster of orchestras and ensembles such as the Asko|Schönberg Ensemble, the Paris-based Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.
