ORBI ofwel ‘The Oscillating Revenge of the Background Instruments’ is een kamermuziek-rockgroep. Drie klassieke musici en één muzikant uit de blues en rock scene dagen elkaar continu uit door bijvoorbeeld virtuoze gitaarsolo’s na te bootsen met een fagot of contrabas. Ze spelen muziek van Gustav Mahler tot The Doors, Pink Floyd en Metallica.
Topmusici die niet van grenzen houden
Rick Stotijn geldt momenteel als een van de meest vooraanstaande contrabassisten ter wereld. Bram van Sambeek werd aanbevolen door verscheidene beroemdheden, zoals Valery Gergiev, die hem naast ‘very gifted’ ook kwalificeerde als ‘not eccentric but a little bit unusual’. En dat geldt eigenlijk voor alle musici van ORBI: het zijn vier eigenzinnige jongens die niet van grenzen houden.
Experimenteren met instrumenten
Hoe ze tot hun spannende resultaten komen? Bram van Sambeek over een repetitie: ‘Terwijl percussionist Marijn naar het juiste formaat olievat zocht om een agressief geluid te kunnen produceren dat toch nog niet de bas en de fagot de studio uitblaast, was ik uren bezig met de kunst van het door je fagot heen roepen om de ruige geluiden te vinden die horen bij de uitbarstingen van Robert Plant in Since I’ve been loving you van Led Zeppelin. Rick had intussen de grenzen van de contrabas zover opgerekt als tot waar de toets de vingers niet langer begeleidt en nog nooit een strijkstok de snaren heeft geraakt, terwijl we alle drie werden gecoacht door onze briljante Hammondorgelspeler Sven […] die ons verzekerde van het juiste rockgevoel en de flow.’
Alle vier vormen een ritmische sectie die hun solopartijen spelen dat de stukken er af vliegen.

ORBI (The Oscillating Revenge of the Background Instruments), a chamber music rock group where they try to constantly challenge each other by for instance copying virtuosic guitar solo parts on bassoon and double bass. They play Gustav Mahler but also The Doors, Pink Floyd and Metallica.
Top musicians who do not like boundaries
Rick Stotijn is one of the most prominent double bass players in the world at this moment in time. Bram van Sambeek is often recommended by celebraties like Valery Gergiev, who called him ‘very gifted’ but also ‘not eccentric but a little bit unusual’. That however goes for all musicians of ORBI. They are four quirky men who do not like boundaries.
Experimenting with instruments
How do they reach they interesting results? Bram van Sambeek says: ‘While Marijn was looking for the right size of oil vessel to make an aggressive sound that still doesn’t blow the bass and bassoon out of the studio, I spent hours refining the art of shouting through the bassoon to find the rugged sound suitable for the outbursts of Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin’s Since I’ve been loving you. Rick has pushed the limits of the double bass to where no finger board supports the fingers and no bow has ever touched the strings before, while the three of us have been coached by our brilliant Hammond player Sven, the only real blues/rock musician in the band, and the one who ensured the presence of the rock feeling and flow.’
