Éternelle Dualité – Songs of Love and War
Wat hebben liefde en oorlog met elkaar te maken? Weinig, lijkt het. Maar wel zijn het twee grote, existentiële thema’s en hebben ze componisten als Wagner, Gounod en Ravel tot hun mooiste werk weten te inspireren. De vier musici van dit koffieconcert begrepen dat en stelden een prachtig programma samen rond oorlog en liefde: ‘Éternelle Dualité: Songs of Love and War.’
Elegante bariton
Eerder verscheen al hun gelijknamige cd. NRC Handelsblad was enthousiast, deelde vier sterren uit: ‘Schitterend! Deze cd valt in alles op door de zorg en de liefde van de makers. Florian Just beschikt over een elegante bariton, die perfect bij dit repertoire past.’ Ook De Liedvriend prees de stem van Just: ‘Teder en toegewijd wanneer het over de liefde gaat, heftig en strijdlustig wanneer de oorlog ter sprake komt.’
Op reis
We gaan op reis door het Frankrijk van het Fin de Siècle. We ontmoeten de grote emoties die ons bestaan en onze handelingen bepalen. We worden verleid door de onzichtbare fluit van André Caplet, horen Luigi Dallapiccola die de onheilspellende dromen van Karel de Grote verbeeldt. Dompelen ons onder in de ondoordringbare melancholie van Henri Duparc, in de klemmende hartstocht van Jules Massenet, in het francofiele patriottisme van Richard Wagner en in Maurice Ravels exotische extravagantie.
Zoektocht
Het was een zoektocht voor de musici, die spelen bij De Nederlandse Opera en het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. Bariton, piano, fluit en cello is geen alledaagse combinatie. En dolend door Fin de Siècle Frankrijk verlies je je makkelijk in even lieflijke als slaapverwekkende etherische herdersmuziekjes bij monde van de fluit.
Dus haalden ze arrangeur/componist Wijnand van Klaveren erbij, die een aantal schitterende arrangementen afleverde.
Te gast bij de radio
Just, Moulin, Heber en Grijpink, te gast bij De Klassieken het radioprogramma van Radio 4. In deze uitzending spelen ze de mooiste stukken van o.a. Ravel en Duparc.

What do love and war have to do with each other? Little, it seems. Yet they are two great existential themes and have inspired composers such as Wagner, Gounod and Ravel to their finest works. The four musicians of this koffieconcert understood this and put together a wonderful program around war and love: Éternelle Dualité: Songs of Love and War.
Elegant baritone
Previously they released their CD of the same name. NRC Handelsblad was enthusiastic, handing out four stars: “Superb! This CD-stands out in everything because of the care and love of the makers. Florian Just possesses an elegant baritone, perfectly suited to this repertoire.’ De Liedvriend also praised Just’s voice: ‘Tender and devoted when it’s about love, fierce and combative when war comes up.’
A journey
We go on a journey through the France of Fin de Siècle. We meet the great emotions that define our existence and our actions. We are seduced by the invisible flute of André Caplet, hear Luigi Dallapiccola depicting the ominous dreams of Charlemagne. Immerse ourselves in the impenetrable melancholy of Henri Duparc, in the clenching passion of Jules Massenet, in the Francophile patriotism of Richard Wagner and in Maurice Ravel’s exotic extravagance.
Quest
It was a quest for the musicians, who play with The Dutch Opera and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Baritone, piano, flute and cello is not an everyday combination. And wandering through Fin de Siècle France, it’s easy to get lost in ethereal shepherd’s music that is as lovely as it is sleepy through the flute. So they brought in arranger/composer Wijnand van Klaveren, who delivered some brilliant arrangements.
