Het jonge Barbican String Quartet is hard bezig de wereld te veroveren met hun krachtig intieme en virtuoze, gebalanceerde spel. Dit programma met strijkkwartetten van Haydn, Berg en Beethoven is een staalkaart van wat ze te bieden hebben.
Strijkkwartetten van Haydn, Berg en Beethoven
Joseph Haydn was grondlegger van het strijkkwartet. Zijn Strijkkwartet nr. 36 in Bes op. 50/1 heeft alles wat zo heerlijk is aan Haydns kwartetten: compositorisch vernuft, prachtige melodieën, energie in overvloed, statige allure en een welkome dosis humor. Met zijn Strijkkwartet nr. 15 in a op. 132 sloot Beethoven een lange periode van ziekte af. In het derde deel verklankte Beethoven zijn opluchting en dankbaarheid in het aangrijpende ‘Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenden’. Het is het middelpunt van een monumentaal kwartet. Alban Bergs vroege Strijkkwartet op. 3 staat op de drempel van een nieuwe tijd: van tonale laatromantiek naar modernere klanken. In zijn meeslepende lyriek is het typisch Berg: uitdagend maar toegankelijk.
Barbican String Quartet
Het Barbican Kwartet werd opgericht in 2014 aan Guildhall School of Music en Drama te Londen, waar alle vier de musici studeerden, ze noemden zichzelf naar de zaal waar ze hun eerste concert gaven: de Barbican Centre in Londen. In Nederland is het kwartet zeer actief: ze traden meerdere malen op tijdens het Grachten Festival Amsterdam, speelden in het Concertgebouw en live op Radio 4. Niet verwonderlijk, met een Nederlandse violiste. Maar met strijkers uit Canada, Duitsland en Bulgarije is het een kwartet van de wereld. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk werd het kwartet verkozen als Young Concert Artist Trust Finalisten 2020 en in 2017 maakten zij hun debuut in de gerenommeerde Wigmore Hall. Ook in Duitsland zijn ze ondersteboven van het kwartet: ‘fijn gestructureerd en virtuoos gebalanceerd (…) brachten de Barbicans in Beethovens op. 59/2 een intensiteit en instinctiviteit die het langzame deel nodig heeft, terwijl ze de andere delen plezier, razernij en kracht gaven. Een terecht daverend applaus.’

String Quartet of Haydn, Berg and Beethoven
Joseph Haydn was the founder of the string quartet. His String Quartet No. 36 in B-flat op. 50/1 has everything that is so delightful about Haydn’s quartets: compositional ingenuity, beautiful melodies, energy in abundance, stately allure and a welcome dose of humor. With his String Quartet No. 15 in a op. 132, Beethoven concluded a long period of illness. In the third movement, Beethoven expressed his relief and gratitude in the poignant ‘Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenden’. It is the centerpiece of a monumental quartet. Alban Berg’s early String Quartet op. 3 stands on the threshold of a new era: from tonal late Romanticism to more modern sounds. In its compelling lyricism, it is typical Berg: challenging but accessible.
Barbican String Quartet

In the Netherlands, the quartet is very active: they performed several times at the Grachten Festival Amsterdam, played at the Concertgebouw and live on Radio 4. Not surprising, with a Dutch violinist. But with strings from Canada, Germany and Bulgaria, it is a quartet of the world. In the United Kingdom, the quartet was chosen as Young Concert Artist Trust Finalists 2020, and in 2017 they made their debut at the renowned Wigmore Hall. In Germany they are also impressed by the quartet: ‘finely structured and virtuosically balanced (…) the Barbicans brought in Beethoven’s op. 59/2 an intensity and instinctiveness that the slow movement needs, while they gave the other movements pleasure, frenzy and power. Deserved thunderous applause.’
