Programma

Hindemith Vioolsonate in Es op. 11/1 | Ysaÿe Rêve d’enfant | Ravel Keuze uit Le Tombeau de Couperin | Debussy Vioolsonate in g | Korngold Dogberry and Verges uit Much ado about nothing Suite | Granados Danza Española nr. 5 | Elgar Vioolsonate in e op. 82
Shunske Sato viool | Shuann Chai piano

Of: herdenkt.

Reflectief

Programme

Hindemith Vioolsonate in Es on. 11/1 | Ysaÿe Rêve d’enfant | Ravel Selection from Le Tombeau de Couperin | Debussy violin sonata in g | Korngold Dogberry and Verges from Much ado about nothing Suite | Granados Danza Española nr. 5 | Elgar Vioolsonate in e op. 82
Shunske Sato violin | Shuann Chai piano

Violinist Shunske Sato is a regular guest in Leiden! Just last season he played Brahms’ violin concerto here, together with the Nieuwe Philharmonie conducted by Johannes Leertouwer. Now his partner is American pianist Shuann Chai, ‘a real ear-opener,’ according to Fanfare Magazine. The duo can be heard playing music from around World War I: Debussy, Ravel, Elgar and others.

Torpedoed

Not all of these composers came through that Great War undamaged. The Spaniard Enrique Granados for example died when he crossed the English Channel in 1916 and was torpedoed by an enemy German U-boat. Or the Belgian Eugène Ysaÿe, whose son had to serve. Claude Debussy, too, had difficulty escaping the war, fell into a depression but still focused extra ardently on what he called a national ‘Musique Française’. His only violin sonata from 1917, the last thing he put on paper, attests to this.

Forest magic

Edward Elgar felt oppressed by the gloomy mood of war. He left London and took refuge in a cottage in the countryside, far from the turmoil of war. According to his wife, the second movement of the violin sonata he wrote there in 1918 was supposedly inspired by the ‘forest magic’ of the woods near Fittleworth. The premiere was postponed because of the war, Erich Wolfgang Korngold adapted his stage music to Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing for violin and piano. Affected by the First World War, certainly, is Maurice Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin, in which the composer musically honors six war casualties who were friends. Or: commemorates.

Reflective

Shunske Sato not only plays, he also presents a number of recordings of the composers being played. This sometimes introverted and reflective concert is a counterpart to Sato’s performance more than two weeks earlier, on May 8th, where he played Vivaldi’s exuberant The Four Seasons.
