Concerto Köln | Shunske Sato viool
De violist Shunske Sato is zeker geen onbekende in Leiden en zo geliefd dat de programmeur hem elk jaar weer probeert te ‘krijgen’. Vorig seizoen was Shunske goed voor een uitvoering van alle vioolsonates van Beethoven en een prachtig Brahms-vioolconcert. Nu is hij terug met Concerto Köln, waarvan hij concertmeester is. En met Vivaldi’s De vier jaargetijden.
Levendig
De meest geliefde klassieke muziek ooit? Dat moeten wel Antonio Vivaldi’s Vier jaargetijden zijn. Zulke levendige, virtuoze en emotionerende muziek! Vivaldi schreef ze tussen 1718 en 1720 toen hij kapelmeester was aan het hof van Mantua. Publiceren deed hij ze – in Amsterdam! – als deel van een dikke bundel muziek die beroemd zou worden en de inspiratie vormde voor veel componisten na hem: Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione – De wedstrijd tussen harmonie en uitvinding.
Dronken dansers en behaaglijke vuurtjes
De vier jaargetijden veroorzaakten een revolutie in de muziek. Zo suggestief, zo bijna realistisch hun onderwerp uitbeeldend. Vivaldi publiceerde ze samen met vier gedichten die vertellen waar de muziek over gaat. En dat zijn stromende kreken, zingende vogels (allerlei verschillende, apart gekarakteriseerd), een schaapsherder en zijn blaffende waakhond, zoemende vliegen, stormen, regen, onweer, dronken dansers, jachtpartijen vanuit het perspectief van jager én prooi, bevroren landschappen en behaaglijke vuurtjes in de winter.
Authentiek
Niemand blijft onverschillig onder deze muziek. En zo werden en worden De vier jaargetijden gearrangeerd voor welke denkbare bezetting ook. Niemand minder dan Bach was er zo van onder de indruk, dat hij in zijn cantate Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende uitgebreid een thema gebruikt uit De lente. Straatmusici vergrijpen zich met accordeon of anderszins graag aan de Winter. Hoe charmant dat allemaal ook is, toch is het weer eens prettig dat we Vivaldi’s illustere viertal nu door Shunske Sato en Concerto Köln in de mooist denkbare vorm kunnen horen.

Concerto Köln | Shunske Sato violin
Violinist Shunske Sato is certainly no stranger to Leiden and so well liked that the programmer tries to “get” every year. Last season Shunske provided a performance of all of Beethoven’s violin sonatas and a beautiful Brahms violin concerto. Now he is back with Concerto Köln, of which he is concertmaster, playing Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.
Lively
The most beloved classical music ever? That has to be Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Such lively, virtuosic and emotive music! Vivaldi wrote them between 1718 and 1720 when he was Kapellmeister at the court of Mantua. He published them – in Amsterdam! – as part of a large volume of music that would become famous and inspired many composers after him: Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione – The contest between harmony and invention.
Drunk dancers and cozy fires
The four seasons revolutionized music. So evocative, so almost realistically depicting their subject. Vivaldi published them along with four poems (his own?) that tell what the music is about. And that includes flowing creeks, singing birds (many different ones, characterized separately), a shepherd and his barking guard dog, buzzing flies, storms, rain, thunderstorms, drunken dancers, hunting parties from the perspective of hunter AND prey, frozen landscapes and cozy fires in winter.
Authentic
No one remains indifferent amongst this music. And so The Four Seasons were and are arranged for any conceivable instrumentation. None other than Bach was so impressed by it that he extensively used a theme from The Spring in his cantata Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende. Street musicians like to indulge in Winter with accordion, among other things. As charming as all that is, it is still once again comforting that we can now hear Vivaldi’s illustrious foursome by Shunske Sato and Concerto Köln in the most beautiful form imaginable.
