Wie aan de gitaar denkt, denkt aan Spanje. In de tijd dat componisten als Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados en Isaac Albéniz opzoek gingen naar hun Spaanse identiteit in de muziek, was de gitaar hét instrument om Spaanse volksliederen op te begeleiden. In dit vurige en meeslepende programma vormen die Canciones Españolas de rode draad. Componisten in dit concert zijn de grote Spaanse namen van eind 19e eeuw tot midden 20e eeuw. We maken een uitstapje naar de Spaanse gitaarmuziek die al die laat 19e eeuwse Spaanse componisten waarschijnlijk in hun collectieve culturele geheugen hadden: de Folia van Gaspar Sanz, uitgevoerd op een echte barokgitaar.

Sopraan Channa Malkin en gitarist Izhar Elias staan bekend om hun verhalende concertprogramma’s met een sterk persoonlijk karakter. Hun album Songs of Love and Exile met Sefardische liederen oogstte lof in binnen- en buitenland, en kreeg o.a. 4 sterren in de Volkskrant: “Dat is een bijzondere cd geworden. Haar stem is prachtig: een jong geluid, een volwassen behandeling. Haar verteltrant is indringend.” Het duo trad onder meer op bij de Nationale Opera, Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden, de Noorderkerk in Amsterdam en CityProms Leeuwarden. Zij waren meermaals te gast in de studio bij Radio 4 en bij Podium Witteman.

When you think of the guitar, you think of Spain. At the time when composers such as Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados and Isaac Albéniz were looking for their Spanish identity in music, the guitar was the main instrument to accompany Spanish folk songs. The Canciones Españolas are the common thread in this fiery and compelling programme. One melody is a must in this thoroughly Spanish program: the theme from Rodrigo’s second part of Concierto de Aranjuez, one of the most famous guitar compositions of all time.

Guitarist Izhar Elias is a regular at the Stadsgehoorzaal. It is clear that Izhar is one of the most versatile guitarists of his generation, because he’s always coming up with something new: from ultramodern to ancient, from experimental to classical. But Izhar also has a number of regular collaborations. Such as the one with flutist Erik Bosgraaf, with whom he celebrates his twentieth anniversary with us earlier this season. He also forms a permanent duo with Channa Malkin, a soprano who is known for her “immersive musical personality and unbridled creativity” (Jury Grachtenfestivalprijs 2020).
