Baritone Thomas Oliemans has already proven that he is an excellent pianist with Die Winterreise: he accompanied himself on the piano while singing. For the infinitely subtle and extremely difficult French repertoire he takes pianist Paolo Giacometti with him, but he also takes a seat at the grand piano himself: together they play Ravel’s Ma Mère l’Oye quatre-mains.

Thomas Oliemans

About an earlier performance by Thomas Oliemans Peter van der Lint wrote: ‘It was an extremely fascinating performance (…). He is a wonderful singer, who can also play the piano excellently.’

Paolo Giacometti

Pianist Paolo Giacometti needs no introduction, that’s how often he has played in our Stadsgehoorzaal. Even this year, on October 23, as a duo partner of Pieter Wispelwey.

Fauré, Debussy and Ravel

A French song is called ‘Mélodie’, as opposed to the popular ‘Chanson’. The French Mélodie was created independently of the German Lied and is therefore completely different: lighter, more indefinable, more ethereal. Gabriel Fauré’s songs reflect the Fin de siècle: refined, dreamy, lyrical, sometimes witty and playful, rarely really sad and never really furious. Fauré paved the way for Claude Debussy’s even stronger impressionism. Maurice Ravel is often mentioned in the same breath as Debussy, but that is not completely fair: his piano music is all his own style and unique, a world in itself.
