De Franse componist Erik Satie is bij het grote publiek vooral bekend van zijn ‘klassieke hits’ zoals de minimalistische Gymnopédies en Gnossiennes. Wat minder bekend is, is zijn unieke gebruik van satire in zijn pianomuziek. Zijn stukken bevatten vaak subtiele ironie en humoristische elementen, die de serieuze klassieke tradities uitdagen en bevragen. Door het gebruik van onverwachte harmonieën, bizarre melodieën en eigenzinnige titels zoals Gedroogde embryo’s, De dromende vis en Krijgerslied van de bonenkoning, creëerde Satie een speelse en soms absurdistische wereld in zijn composities, die zijn tijdgenoten verbaasden en zijn invloed op componisten zoals Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud en Poulenc versterkten. Pianist Thomas Beijer speelt tijdens dit concert niet alleen de muziek van Satie, ook leest hij voor uit memoire-achtige teksten van deze wonderbaarlijke en provocerende componist.

Pianist Thomas Beijer is een ware alleskunner. Hij speelt zowel soloconcerten als recitals, en kamermuziekconcerten met muzikale partners waaronder celliste Quirine Viersen, violiste Simone Lamsma en de zangeressen Barbara Kozelj en Laetitia Gerards. Sinds 2019 is Beijer directeur van de Young Pianist Foundation en in 2022 ontving hij de Nederlandse Muziekprijs, de hoogste onderscheiding die door het Ministerie van OCW wordt uitgereikt aan een Nederlands klassiek musicus.
Naast zijn werk op het podium is Beijer werkzaam als componist, schrijver en tekenaar. Zijn novelle Geen Jalapeños verscheen in 2017 bij Uitgeverij Prometheus en de animaties die tijdens dit concert getoond worden zijn van zijn hand. ‘Alles wordt anders met een stel zeekomkommers op een groot scherm. Of aardappelen’ aldus Beijer.

Satie
French composer Erik Satie is best known to the general public for his ‘classical hits’ such as the minimalist Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes. What is less known is his unique use of satire in his piano music. His pieces often contain subtle irony and humorous elements, challenging and questioning serious classical traditions. Using unexpected harmonies, bizarre melodies and quirky titles such as Dried Embryos, The Dreaming Fish and Warrior Song of the Bean King, Satie created a playful and sometimes absurdist world in his compositions, which astonished his contemporaries and strengthened his influence on composers such as Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud and Poulenc. At this concert, pianist Thomas Beijer will not only play Satie’s music, but also read from memoir-like texts written by the prodigious and provocative composer.

Pianist Thomas Beijer is a man of many talents. He plays solo concerts as well as recitals, and chamber music concerts with musical partners including cellist Quirine Viersen, violinist Simone Lamsma and singers Barbara Kozelj and Laetitia Gerards. Since 2019, Beijer has been director of the Young Pianist Foundation and in 2022 he received the Dutch Music Prize, the highest award given by the Ministry of OCW to a Dutch classical musician.
Besides his work on stage, Beijer works as a composer, writer and illustrator. His novella No Jalapeños was published by Prometheus Publishers in 2017, and the animations shown during this concert are his own. ‘Everything becomes different with a bunch of sea cucumbers on a big screen. Or potatoes,’ says Beijer about his animations.
