De Poolse vioolvirtuoos Maria Włoszczowska speelt samen met onze ‘huispianist’ Paolo Giacometti de mooiste muziek voor viool en piano.

De Poolse vioolvirtuoos Maria Włoszczowska is kind aan huis bij de Londense Wigmore Hall en debuteerde dit seizoen op de BBC Proms. Ze is een fervent kamermusicus maar ook een gerenommeerd soliste en ze was concertmeester van o.a. Chamber Orchestra of Europe en de Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Al die kwaliteiten zet zij in in dit programma met muziek van Mozart tot Messiaen. Zij wordt begeleid door onze huispianist Paolo Giacometti, die wat ons betreft op geen enkel seizoensprogramma mag ontbreken. Want Giacometti combineert technische perfectie met een feilloze smaak. Hij kent onze vleugels als geen ander en weet ze de mooiste klanken te ontlokken.
Mozart, Szymanowski, Messiaen en Brahms
De vioolsonates van Mozart zijn zowel een startpunt voor de muziek voor viool en piano als een hoogtepunt. Hij componeerde de Vioolsonate nr. 21 in e KV 304 rond de dood van zijn moeder en dat is te horen in deze stemmige en bij tijd en wijle zeer aangrijpende muziek.
Een volgend hoogtepunt is de Vioolsonate nr. 1 van Johannes Brahms. Het was Brahms’ vierde of vijfde poging om een vioolsonate te componeren, eerdere probeersels gingen de open haard in. Pas nadat hij het Vioolconcert had geschreven kon hij een vioolsonate schrijven waar hij tevreden over was. De sonate is teder, maar toch tamelijk melancholiek van aard en is een eerbetoon aan zijn veel te jong overleden petekind Felix Schumann.
De Poolse componist Karol Szymanovski is vooral beroemd vanwege zijn twee Vioolconcerten en zijn virtuoze, frisse en levendige 3 Caprices de Paganini. Zijn drie Mythes zijn prachtig mysterieus en overwegend ingetogen, met geweldige extraverte uitbarstingen. Olivier Messiaen schreef zijn Thème et Variations als huwelijkscadeau voor zijn vrouw. Het is Messiaen op z’n tederst, toegankelijk en aansprekend.

Polish violin virtuoso Maria Włoszczowska, together with our ‘house pianist’ Paolo Giacometti, plays the most beautiful music for violin and piano.

Polish violin virtuoso Maria Włoszczowska is a familiar face at London’s Wigmore Hall and made her debut at the BBC Proms this season. An avid chamber musician as well as a renowned soloist, she has been concertmaster of Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, among others. She puts all these qualities to use in this program of music from Mozart to Messiaen. She is accompanied by our house pianist Paolo Giacometti, who as far as we are concerned should not be missing from any seasonal program. For Giacometti combines technical perfection with unerring taste. He knows our grand pianos like no other and knows how to elicit the most beautiful sounds from them.

Mozart’s violin sonatas are both a starting point for music for violin and piano and a pinnacle. He composed the Violin Sonata No. 21 in e KV 304 around the death of his mother and this can be heard in this tuneful and at times very moving music.
Another highlight is Johannes Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 1. It was Brahms’ fourth or fifth attempt to compose a violin sonata; earlier attempts went into the fireplace. Only after he wrote the Violin Concerto was he able to write a violin sonata he was satisfied with. The sonata is tender, yet rather melancholy in nature and is a tribute to his godson Felix Schumann, who died far too young.
Polish composer Karol Szymanovski is most famous for his two Violin Concertos and his virtuosic, fresh and lively 3 Caprices de Paganini. His three Myths are wonderfully mysterious and mostly subdued, with terrific extroverted outbursts. Olivier Messiaen wrote his Thème et Variations as a wedding present for his wife. It is Messiaen at his tenderest, accessible and appealing.
