Fauré Pianokwintet nr. 2 in c op. 115 | Sjostakovitsj Pianokwintet in g op. 57
De violisten Shin Sihan en Yamen Saadi, altviolist Takehiro Konoe, cellist Alexander Warenberg en pianiste Nathalia Milstein ontmoetten elkaar in de bekende wijnstreek Chianti in Toscane. Ze gaven er concerten en besloten om in de toekomst samen verder te gaan als kwintet, vernoemd naar de Chianti. Bij dit concert staat er grootse muziek van Fauré en Sjostakovitsj op hun lessenaars.
Diepzinnig als Bach
Gabriel Fauré was 74 jaar toen hij zijn Tweede pianokwintet componeerde. Hij werd steeds dover en zijn directeurschap van het Parijse conservatorium liep op zijn end. In de zomer van 1919 heeft hij vakantie, en vakantie betekent voor Fauré: componeren. Altijd een traag en precies werker, krijgt hij het kwintet die zomer niet af en trekt pas in 1921 in Parijs de dubbele streep achter het laatste deel. Maar het harde werken loont. De première is een groot succes; collega-componist Aaron Copland schrijft zelfs: ‘Ik denk dat wanneer je gevraagd zou worden wat Fauré’s beste werk is, je het snel eens zou worden over het Tweede pianokwintet. Het bevat een bron van pure spiritualiteit, een menselijke kracht die je alleen bij de grootste meesters aantreft.’ En niet zozeer romantisch als wel klassiek, vindt Copland het, maar net zo diepzinnig als Bach of Mozart.

Meest gespeelde kwintet
Met zijn Pianokwartet schreef Dmitri Sjostakovitsj één van zijn meest uitgevoerde kamermuziekwerken; überhaupt is het één van de meest gespeelde pianokwintetten die er zijn. Het kwintet ontstond in de zomer van 1940, Europa was al in oorlog. De première gaf hij met zichzelf aan de piano en het beroemde Beethovenkwartet aan zijn zijde. Sjostakovitsj hield zich aan een tamelijk traditioneel opzet, maar het Scherzo is vintage Sjostakovitsj.

Violinists Shin Sihan and Yamen Saadi, violist Takehiro Konoe, cellist Alexander Warenberg and pianist Nathalia Milstein met in the famous Chianti wine region in Tuscany. They performed concerts there, and decided to continue together in the future as a quintet, named after Chianti. At this concert, great music by Fauré and Shostakovich is on their lecterns.
As profound as Bach
Gabriel Fauré was 74 when he composed his Second Piano Quintet. He was becoming more and more deaf, and his directorship of the Paris Conservatory was coming to an end. In the summer of 1919 he took a vacation, and vacation for Fauré meant: composing. Always a slow and precise worker, he did not complete the quintet that summer and only finished the last part in 1921 in Paris. But his hard work paid off. The premiere was a huge success; fellow composer Aaron Copland even writes: ‘I think if you were asked what Fauré’s best work is, you would quickly agree on the Second Piano Quintet. It contains a source of pure spirituality, a human strength found only in the greatest masters.’ And not so much romantic as classical, Copland thinks, but as profound as Bach or Mozart.
Meest gespeelde kwintet
With his Piano Quartet, Dmitri Shostakovich wrote one of his most frequently performed chamber music works; at any rate, it is one of the most frequently played piano quintets of all time. When the quintet was created in the summer of 1940, Europe was already at war. At the premiere, he accompanied himself on the piano and had the famlous Beethovenquartet at his side. Shostakovich kept to a rather traditional format, but the Scherzo is vintage Shostakovich.
