Nefes: Bektashi-hymnen uit Istanbul en de Balkan
Dit concert brengt tien studenten samen van de afdeling Global Musics van Codarts University of the Arts (specialisatie: Maqam- en modale tradities van de Zijderoutes). Zij vertolken Nefes: poëtische, devotionele liederen uit de Bektashi-soefitraditie. Deze muzikale en spirituele praktijk ontstond in Anatolië in de 13e eeuw en bloeide later in Istanbul en op de Balkan. De hymnen worden gezongen binnen het rijke modale systeem van de Ottomaanse makam-muziek, waarin melodie, poëzie en innerlijke bezinning nauw met elkaar verbonden zijn. In dit programma delen de studenten een levende muzikale traditie die spreekt over gemeenschap, veerkracht en innerlijke reflectie, en die het publiek uitnodigt tot een ontmoeting met muzikale werelden gevormd door beweging, uitwisseling en gedeelde geschiedenissen.
Het ensemble wordt begeleid door Kudsi Erguner. Kudsi is een internationaal gerenommeerd ney-speler, componist, onderzoeker, en UNESCO Artist for Peace, en wordt erkend om zijn levenslange inzet voor het behoud en de doorgeving van immaterieel cultureel erfgoed. Zijn betrokkenheid plaatst dit project binnen een levende traditie van overdracht en vakmanschap, en nodigt het publiek uit om deze hymnen niet als museumstukken te ervaren, maar als actuele, levende expressies van cultuur en spiritualiteit.

Nefes: Bektashi Hymns from Istanbul and the Balkans
This concert brings together ten students from the Global Musics Department of Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam (specialisation: Maqam and Modal Traditions of the Silk Roads) to perform Nefes: poetic devotional songs from the Bektashi Sufi tradition. Originating in Anatolia in the 13th century and later flourishing in Istanbul and the Balkans, this musical-spiritual repertoire reflects centuries of cultural exchange along the Silk Roads. The hymns are sung within the rich modal system of Ottoman makam music, where melody, poetry, and spiritual reflection are closely connected. Through this performance, the students share a living musical tradition that speaks of community, resilience, and inner reflection, while offering audiences a window into a musical world shaped by movement, encounter, and shared histories.
The ensemble is guided by Kudsi Erguner, internationally renowned ney player, composer, and scholar, and a UNESCO Artist for Peace, recognised for his lifelong contribution to the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage. His involvement connects this project to an unbroken lineage of practice and transmission, inviting audiences to experience these hymns not as historical artefacts, but as living expressions of culture and spirituality, carried forward with care and responsibility into the present.
