De zusjes Maria en Nathalia Milstein zijn volledig op elkaar ingespeeld. Dat is ook wel nodig in dit programma met de titel Parallel Universes. Want samen verkennen zij de werelden van Beethoven, Schubert, Bartók en Ravel. Maria en Nathalia Milstein groeiden op in een familie van musici en begonnen samen te spelen zodra hun leeftijdsverschil van 10 jaar dat toeliet. Het duo treedt veelvuldig op in Europa in zalen als het Concertgebouw en het Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. In september 2024 brengt het duo een opname van Franz Schuberts complete werken voor viool en piano uit bij het Franse label Mirare.
Parallelle universa: Beethoven, Schubert, Bartók en Ravel
De werelden van Beethoven en Schubert liggen in elkaars verlengde, hun vioolsonates ontstonden aanhef begin van de negentiende eeuw in Wenen, en zitten op de overgang van de klassieke naar de romantische periode. Bartók en Ravel componeerden een eeuw later twee totaal eigen, duizelingwekkend vernieuwende sonates. Ravel deed zijn inspiratie op bij de Amerikaanse jazz en blues. Bartóks modernistische Vioolsonate nr. 2 is radicaal vernieuwend en zeer indrukwekkend. ‘De vioolpartij van de twee vioolsonates is buitengewoon moeilijk, en alleen een violist van topklasse heeft een kans om ze te leren.’, aldus Bartók zelf. Gelukkig is Maria Milstein precies dat: een violist van topklasse!

Sisters Maria and Nathalia Milstein are completely in sync with each other. They also must be, in this programme entitled Parallel Universes. Together, they explore the worlds of Beethoven, Schubert, Bartók and Ravel. Maria and Nathalia Milstein grew up in a family of musicians and started playing together as soon as their 10-year age difference allowed it. The duo performs frequently in Europe in venues such as the Concertgebouw and the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam.
In September 2024, the duo will release a recording of Franz Schubert’s complete works for violin and piano with the French label Mirare.
Parallelle universa: Beethoven, Schubert, Bartók and Ravel
The worlds of Beethoven and Schubert are an extension of each other; their violin sonatas originated at the beginning of the nineteenth century in Vienna, written in a period of transition from the classical to the romantic period. Bartók and Ravel composed two totally unique, dizzyingly innovative sonatas a century later. Ravel drew inspiration from American jazz and blues. Bartók’s modernist Violin Sonata No 2 is radically innovative and very impressive. ‘The violin parts of the two violin sonatas are extremely difficult, and only a top-class violinist has a chance to learn them,’ Bartók himself said. Fortunately, Maria Milstein is exactly that: a top-class violinist.
