De Zuid-Afrikaanse fortepianist en klavecinist Kristian Bezuidenhout speelt samen met vijf barokstrijkers een spannend Bachprogramma.

Kristian Bezuidenhout houdt niet van hokjes. Hij speelt met hetzelfde gemak op de moderne vleugel als op de fortepiano of klavecimbel. En van al te sterke dogma’s over de authentieke uitvoeringspraktijk moet hij niets hebben. Bij Bezuidenhout staat de kracht van de muziek centraal. Bezuidenhout zoekt dit concertseizoen naar de essentie van een aantal beroemde composities uit de achttiende eeuw: met Concerto Copenhagen kleedt hij concerto’s van Mozart en Beethoven uit tot de kleinst mogelijke bezetting, hier in de Stadsgehoorzaal ontdoet hij een aantal van Bachs meest geliefde klavierconcerten van ballast. Slechts vijf strijkers heeft Bezuidenhout nodig – twee violen, altviool, cello en bas – om tot de kern van Bachs muziek te komen. Dat levert een frisse en lenige Bach op, die tegelijkertijd als nieuw en heel vertrouwd klinkt.

Kristian Bezuidenhout does not like boxes. He plays the modern grand piano with the same ease as the fortepiano or harpsichord. And he doesn’t like strongly set beliefs about authentic performance practice. For Bezuidenhout, the power of music is central. This concert season, Bezuidenhout is looking for the essence of a number of famous compositions from the eighteenth century: with Concerto Copenhagen he strips concertos by Mozart and Beethoven to the smallest possible instrumentation, here in the Stadsgehoorzaal he removes dead weight from a number of Bach’s most beloved piano concertos. Bezuidenhout only needs five strings – two violins, viola, cello and bass – to get to the core of Bach’s music. The result is a fresh and agile Bach that sounds new and very familiar at the same time.
