Schumann Strijkkwartet nr. 3 in A op. 41/3 | Dean Eclipse | Schubert Strijkkwartet nr. 15 in G D 887
Het Britse Doric Quartet is inmiddels kind aan huis in Leiden, ze spelen graag in de Aalmarktzaal en wij zijn elke keer weer ‘flabbergasted’ over hun fenomenale klank, verfijnde smaak en enorme energie. Het kwartet combineert in dit enerverende programma twee favoriete klassieke kwartetten van Schumann en Schubert met een moderne klassieker van Brett Dean.
Schubert
Toen Schubert in de winter van 1825 het strijkkwartet Der Tod und das Mädchen componeerde, verlangde hij daadwerkelijk naar de dood. Die kwam pas een kleine drie jaar later. Gelukkig maar, want in de tussentijd schreef hij nog Die Winterreise – misschien wel de beroemdste Liedcyclus ooit – het Strijkkwintet in C en het Strijkkwartet nr. 15 in G, D. 887: een kwartet van een enorme schaal en ongeëvenaarde diepgang, aan de poorten van de dood.
Brett Dean: Eclipse
Het Doric String Quartet heeft al meer dan vijftien jaar een bijzondere band met de Australische componist Brett Dean: ‘Ik zal nooit vergeten dat ik in 2007 toevallig een radio-uitzending hoorde van mijn eerste strijkkwartet, Eclipse, op radiozender ABC, live vanaf de Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. Ik had al het gerucht gehoord dat een of twee kwartetten mijn stuk op hun repertoire hadden. Ik had het begin van het concert gemist, maar toen ik luisterde besefte ik steeds meer dat dit een van de beste en meest inzichtrijke interpretaties was van mijn muziek die ik ooit had gehoord, van spelers die ik niet eens kende. Ik moest simpelweg tot het einde blijven luisteren om uit te vinden wie deze groep was: het Doric String Quartet uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Sindsdien zijn de Dorics en ik goede vrienden en kamermuziekpartners geworden, we hebben de afgelopen tien jaar samen talloze keren opgetreden en opgenomen.’ Een aanbeveling van de componist zelf, daar hebben wij uiteraard niets aan toe te voegen.

Leiden is becoming like a second home for the British Doric Quartet, as they like to play often in the Aalmarktzaal and we are flabbergasted every time they do with their phenomenal sound, refined taste and great energy. In this exciting program The Quartet combines two classic favorites; Beethoven & Schubert with modern classics of Brett Dean.
Schubert
When Schubert composed The String Quartet Der Tod und das Mädchen in the winter of 1825, he was actually longing for death himself. This only came about three years later. Lucky for us, because in the meantime he wrote Die Winterreise – maybe the most famous songcyle ever made – the String Quintet and the String Quartet nr. 15 in G, D. 877: A Quartet of enormous scale and unmatched gauge, at the brink of death.
Brett Dean: Eclipse
The Doric String Quartet has had a special bond with the Australian componist Brett Dean for more than fifteen years. ‘I’ll never forget, back in 2007, tuning in by chance to a broadcast on ABC, live from the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, of my first string quartet, Eclipse. I’d heard a rumor that one or two groups had taken on this piece as part of their repertoire that year. I’d missed the beginning of the performance, but as I listened, I became increasingly aware that this was one of the finest and most insightful interpretations of a piece of mine that I’d ever heard, and from players I’d never even met. I simply had to listen till the end to find out which group was playing: the Doric String Quartet from the UK. Since then the Dorics and I have become close friends and regular chamber music partners, having performed and recorded together numerous times over the past ten years.’ A recommendation from the composer himself, we obviously don’t have anything more to add.
