Rietkwintet Calefax breidt zijn excentrieke collectie van instrumenten steeds verder uit. Steeds nieuwe klanken, steeds weer wat anders! Waag een sprong in het diepe met de contrabasklarinet, laat je ontroeren door de melancholische weemoed van de duduk en zweef weg op klanken uit vijf draagbare orgelkastjes. Ontdek vergeten instrumenten en laat je verrassen door uitzonderlijke combinaties en beestachtige capriolen. Met Saint-Saëns’ geliefde Carnaval des animaux, met Bibers beeldende Representatatio Avium.
Wonderkamertje
Helemaal bovenin, verstopt haast: ja, daar bevindt zich in huize Calefax een apart klein kamertje. Het wonderkamertje. ’t Staat vol met de meest begeerlijke en zeldzame objecten. Er zitten vreemde vogels verscholen. Daar kun je het eigenaardige toejuichen. Daar kun je verre reizen maken zonder dat je op pad hoeft. Daar haalt Calefax zijn inspiratie vandaan. En vanuit daar gaan ze op avontuur.
Het gekste beest
Met empathie en humor zette Saint-Saëns heel veel dieren op muziek: olifant, ezel, kip, haan, schildpad, koekoek, de edele en strenge zwaan. Maar het gekste beest in Carnaval des Animaux is de pianist! Wie gaat er nou de hele dag toonladders zitten studeren? Een andere vreemdeling was Saint-Saëns zelf, die niet begreep dat dit een van zijn geniaalste partituren was; hij wilde niet eens dat hij werd gepubliceerd.
Fantasie
Een beetje gek moet, twee eeuwen eerder, ook Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber zijn geweest. Gek of geniaal, daar zijn de geleerden het nog niet over eens. Met enorm veel fantasie en virtuositeit wist hij van alles uit te beelden met instrumenten. Het voelt nog steeds modern aan. Representatio Avium is een weergave van alles wat met het rijk der vogels te maken heeft. Allerlei schitterende imitaties en heel meeslepend. Hoe het anno nu met de vogels staat? Dat horen we in het speciaal voor Calefax gecomponeerde Zugvogel van Carola Bauckholt, geïnspireerd door de vlucht van trekvogels.

Discover forgotten instruments and be surprised by extraordinary combinations and beastly antics. Featuring Saint-Saëns’ beloved Carnaval des animaux, with Biber’s evocative Representatio Avium.
Wonder room
At the very top, hidden almost: yes, there in the Calefax house is a separate little room. The wonder room. It is full of the most desirable and rare objects. There are strange birds hidden there. There you can applaud the peculiar. There you can travel far away without having to go on the road. That’s where Calefax gets its inspiration. And from there they go on adventures.
The craziest animal
With empathy and humor, Saint-Saëns set many animals to music: elephant, donkey, chicken, rooster, turtle, cuckoo, the noble and stern swan. But the craziest animal in Carnival des Animaux is the pianist! Who sits around all day studying scales? Another stranger was Saint-Saëns himself, who did not understand that this was one of his most brilliant scores; he did not even want it published.
Fantasy
Two centuries earlier,Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber must also have been a little mad. Mad or genius, scholars do not yet agree. With enormous imagination and virtuosity, he knew how to depict all kinds of things with instruments. It still feels modern. Representatio Avium is a representation of everything related to the realm of birds. All kinds of brilliant imitations and very compelling. How are the birds doing nowadays? We hear this in the Zugvogel by Carola Bauckholt, composed especially for Calefax and inspired by the flight of migratory birds.
