Opera saai of oubollig? Niet bij Barok Opera Amsterdam! Uitstekende solisten, een betoverend spelend instrumentaal ensemble, fraaie kostuums en voorstellingen van een aantrekkelijke lengte: het gezelschap weet een steeds groter wordende groep operaliefhebbers aan zich te binden. Nu komt Purcell’s opera The Fairy Queen op de planken, naar het toneelstuk A Midsummer Night’s Dream van Shakespeare. Met Bollywood dans!
Heldere eenvoud
Froggy’s Delight schreef over een productie van Barok Opera Amsterdam: ‘De muziek van Henry Purcell wordt met heldere eenvoud gespeeld. Geen barokistisch maniërisme, geen gesnoef over tijdeigen instrumenten: hier wordt de totale moderniteit van Purcell’s muziek getoond.’
Geliefd
Bollywood dansers, vijf zangers en zes instrumentalisten spelen, zingen en nemen het publiek mee met geestige en dramatische dialogen. Elke acte – er zijn er vijf – wordt afgesloten met een ballet: klassiek, populair, sensueel of macho-achtig. The Fairy Queen beleefde ooit een feestelijke première: hij klonk in 1692 bij het 15-jarig huwelijk van het koningspaar William en Mary. Purcell wisselde zijn schitterende barokaria’s af met teksten uit Shakespeare’s komedie.
De magische bloem
Vier geliefden ontvluchten de meedogenloze wet van hun ouders en komen terecht in een magisch bos waar koning Oberon en koningin Titania over de ‘fairies’ regeren. Op dat moment is er een heftige ruzie gaande tussen de twee over de voogdij van een Indiase jongen. Om te overwinnen, beveelt Oberon de elf Puck om de magische bloem te gaan zoeken waarvan het sap een betoverend effect heeft: degene die het in zijn ogen krijgt, wordt verliefd op het eerste beste wezen dat hij/zij ziet als hij ontwaakt, mens of dier.

Now Purcell’s opera The Fairy Queen is coming onto the stage, based on Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. With Bollywood dancing!

Bollywood dancers, five singers and six instrumentalists play, sing and take the audience by storm with witty and dramatic dialogue. Each act – there are five – concludes with a ballet: classical, popular, sensual or macho. The Fairy Queen once had its celebratory premiere: it was set in 1692 at the 15-year wedding of the royal couple William and Mary. Purcell alternated his brilliant baroquearia’s with texts from Shakespeare’s comedy.
The magical flower
Four lovers flee their parents’ remorseless control and find themselves in a magical forest where King Oberon and Queen Titania rule the “fairies”. At that moment, a heated argument is brewing between the two over the custody of an Indian boy. To triumph, Oberon orders the elf Puck to go find the magical flower whose juice has an enchanting effect: whoever gets it in his eyes falls in love with the first best creature they see when they awake, human or animal.
