Speciaal voor Lucas en Arthur Jussen, en mede in opdracht van Amsterdam Sinfonietta, schreef de Turkse componist en pianist Fazil Say Anka Kuşu ofwel Phoenix, gebaseerd op de Perzische mythologische koningsvogel Simurgh, die gelijkenissen vertoont met het westerse fabeldier Phoenix. Het virtuoze pianoconcert is doordrongen van oosterse ritmes. Het concert opent met These words... van Arvo Pärt. Dit gebed is bedoeld om mensen te weerhouden van misdaad en niet toe te geven aan menselijke zwaktes. Amsterdam Sinfonietta sluit af met het indrukwekkende Adagio uit de Tiende symfonie van Gustav Mahler. Zijn laatste, onvoltooide werk is een lied van pijn en wanhoop over de ontrouw van zijn jonge vrouw Alma.

Especially for Lucas and Arthus Jussen, and co-commissioned by Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Turkish composer and pianist Fazil Say wrote Anka Kuşu (Phoenix), based on the Persian mythological king’s bird Simurgh, which bears similarities to the Western fabled beast Phoenix. The virtuoso piano concerto is infused with Eastern rhythms. The concert opens with These words… by Arvo Pärt. This prayer is meant to keep people from doing bad things and from giving in to human weaknesses. Amsterdam Sinfonietta closes with the impressive Adagio from Gustav Mahler’s Tenth Symphony. His last, unfinished work is a song of pain and despair over the unfaithfulness of his young wife Alma.
