Het concert met Schumanns Vierde Symfonie en het Celloconcert vormt het sluitstuk van een reeks met jaarlijkse Schumann-concerten die Johannes Leertouwer de afgelopen jaren gaf als vervolg op zijn opzienbarende Brahmsproject waarmee hij in januari 2023 promoveerde aan de Universiteit Leiden.

Leertouwers benadering van de symfonieën van Schumann is gebaseerd op zijn onderzoek naar de negentiende-eeuwse uitvoeringspraktijk. Net als andere vooraanstaande internationale experts, zoals professor Clive Brown, constateerde hij dat de manier van musiceren in de negentiende eeuw werd gekenmerkt door een grote mate van flexibiliteit.
Die flexibiliteit had ingrijpende gevolgen voor de omgang met tempo, ritmiek en klank. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat deze negentiende-eeuwse flexibiliteit in de twintigste eeuw is vervangen door een streven naar gelijkmatigheid. Leertouwer maakt een flexibele omgang met ritme en tempo, maar ook andere stijlmiddelen zoals portamento (glijtonen), tot de kern van zijn benadering van het negentiende-eeuwse repertoire. Daarmee probeert hij terug te keren naar een esthetiek van vóór het twintigste-eeuwse modernisme.
Het bijzondere aan zijn werk is dat hij onderzoeksresultaten weet om te zetten in hoorbare, muzikale uitkomsten. Hij richt het orkest in als een laboratorium waarin vergeten of in onbruik geraakte stijlmiddelen opnieuw worden onderzocht en tot klinken worden gebracht. Dit leidt tot verbluffende inzichten en tot een nieuwe ervaring van oud en vertrouwd repertoire.
Schumanns Vierde Symfonie en Celloconcert
Van Schumanns Vierde Symfonie brengt Leertouwer met zijn orkest de vroege versie uit 1841. Hij is ervan overtuigd dat deze versie beter werkt dan de latere gereviseerde uitgave, vooral omdat het stemmenweefsel transparanter is en de orkestratie minder dik.
Voor de pauze klinkt het schitterende Celloconcert. Welke jonge cellist de solo zal spelen weten we nog niet, de audities hiervoor vinden pas in mei plaats. Wat we wel weten is dat Schumanns Celloconcert een poëtische schoonheid heeft en dat het juist door de combinatie van intimiteit en zangerigheid tot een van de meest geliefde soloconcerten uit het repertoire geldt.

The concert featuring Schumann’s Fourth Symphony and Cello Concerto is the finale of a series of annual Schumann concerts that Johannes Leertouwer has given in recent years as a follow-up to his remarkable Brahms project, for which he earned his doctorate at Leiden University in January 2023.

Leertouwer’s approach to Schumann’s symphonies is based on his research into nineteenth-century performance practice. Like other leading international experts, such as Professor Clive Brown, he observed that the way music was performed in the nineteenth century was characterized by a high degree of flexibility.
This flexibility had far-reaching consequences for the handling of tempo, rhythm, and sound. One could say that this nineteenth-century flexibility was replaced in the twentieth century by a striving for uniformity. Leertouwer makes flexible use of rhythm and tempo, as well as other stylistic devices such as portamento (sliding notes), the core of his approach to the nineteenth-century repertoire. In doing so, he attempts to return to an aesthetic that predates twentieth-century modernism.
What makes his work so special is his ability to translate research findings into audible, musical outcomes. He sets up the orchestra as a laboratory in which forgotten or disused stylistic devices are re-examined and brought to life. This leads to astonishing insights and a new experience of old and familiar repertoire.
Schumann’s Fourth Symphony and Cello Concerto
Leertouwer and his orchestra will perform the early version of Schumann’s Fourth Symphony from 1841. He is convinced that this version works better than the later revised edition, mainly because the vocal texture is more transparent and the orchestration less dense.
Before the intermission, the magnificent Cello Concerto will be performed. We do not yet know which young cellist will play the solo, as auditions for this role will not take place until May. What we do know is that Schumann’s Cello Concerto has a poetic beauty and that it is precisely the combination of intimacy and melodiousness that makes it one of the most beloved solo concertos in the repertoire.
