We durven Pieter Wispelwey wel onze huiscellist te noemen, er gaat geen seizoen voorbij waarin we zijn intellectueel scherpe, stilistisch bewuste en uitgesproken persoonlijke spel willen missen. Dat geldt ook voor zijn duopartner Paolo Giacometti. Samen spelen ze Schuberts Arpeggione sonate en Brittens Tweede cellosuite.
Pieter Wispelwey & Paolo Giacometti
Pieter Wispelwey is sinds zijn doorbraak in de jaren ’90 een van de belangrijkste cellisten, niet alleen in Nederland, maar wereldwijd. Met een zeer persoonlijke benadering neemt hij net zo lief de muziek van Bach, waarmee hij een bijzondere band heeft, als het grote romantische repertoire onder handen. Bij Wispelwey is geen concert hetzelfde, de muziek klinkt elke keer weer vers en nieuw, alsof die ter plekke door de componist wordt ingefluisterd.
Paolo Giacometti is niet zozeer Wispelweys pianobegeleider, maar een gelijkwaardige muzikale grootmacht. De Italiaanse pianist die inmiddels al lang als Nederlander door het leven gaat, is volledig aan Wispelwey gewaagd.

Schubert & Britten
Schubert schreef in van zijn mooiste composities voor een muziekinstrument dat zich het best laat omschrijven als een kruising tussen cello en gitaar. Het instrument heeft de zes snaren en de fretten van een gitaar, maar wordt tussen de benen geklemd en gestreken. Beter gezegd: werd gestreken, want de arpeggione is zo goed als uitgestorven. De beroemde cellist Mstislav Rostropovitsj wilde juist deze muziek op zijn sterfbed horen. Het is de muziek die hij zo graag met componist en pianist Benjamin Britten speelde. Na Brittens dood wilde Rostropovitsj de Arpeggione sonate met niemand anders meer uitvoeren.
Van Britten speelt Wispelwey de Tweede suite voor cello solo. Die schreef Britten voor dezelfde Rostropovitsj. De Suite is een eerbetoon aan Bach, in de taal van Britten. Het Declamato – een soort recitatief – de fuga: helemaal Bach, helemaal Britten. De afsluitende Ciaconna is een tocht langs emotionele extremen, soms heel dicht bij Bach – tot (pseudo)citaten aan toe – dan weer zeer grillig en modernistisch.

We dare call Pieter Wispelwey our resident cellist; not a season goes by without his intellectually sharp, stylistically aware, and distinctly personal playing. This also applies to his duo partner, Paolo Giacometti. Together they perform Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata and Britten’s Second Cello Suite.

Since his breakthrough in the 1990s, Pieter Wispelwey has been one of the most important cellists, not only in the Netherlands but worldwide. With a highly personal approach, he tackles the music of Bach, with which he has a special bond, as readily as he tackles the great Romantic repertoire. With Wispelwey, no concert is the same; the music sounds fresh and new every time, as if whispered to him on the spot by the composer.
Paolo Giacometti is not so much Wispelwey’s piano accompanist as an equal musical powerhouse. The Italian pianist, who has long since been living as a Dutchman, is a perfect match for Wispelwey.

Schubert & Britten
Schubert wrote some of his most beautiful compositions for a musical instrument best described as a cross between a cello and a guitar. The instrument has the six strings and frets of a guitar, but is held between the legs and bowed. Or rather, bowed, because arpeggione is all but extinct. The famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich wanted to hear precisely this music on his deathbed. It is the music he so cherished playing with composer and pianist Benjamin Britten. After Britten’s death, Rostropovich refused to perform the Arpeggione Sonata with anyone else.
Wispelwey plays Britten’s Second Suite for Solo Cello. Britten wrote it for the same Rostropovich. The Suite is a tribute to Bach, in Britten’s language. The Declamato—a kind of recitative—the fugue: entirely Bach, entirely Britten. The closing Ciaconna is a journey through emotional extremes, at times very close to Bach – even to the point of (pseudo) quotations – at other times very erratic and modernistic.
