‘Hij spon gewichtsloze frases als van zijde, die in de tijd leken te zweven.’, schreef The Strad lyrisch. Met de Tweede prijs én de publieksprijs van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd en de Avery Fisher Career Grant op zak, is Joshua Brown samen met zijn prachtige Amati-viool druk bezig de wereld te veroveren.
Paolo Giacometti is een Nederlandse pianist van Italiaanse origine. Als solist wordt hij alom geroemd, als begeleider van violisten en cellisten behoort hij tot de absolute wereldtop. Niet voor niets kiest Pieter Wispelwey waar het kan voor Giacometti, samen maakten zij een aantal zeer geprezen cd-opnames. Ook wij wij zijn groot fan: er gaat geen seizoen voorbij dat we Giacometti niet uitnodigen.

Schumann en Brahms vioolsonates
Robert Schumann was een tamelijk monomaan man. In de eerste twaalf jaar van zijn compositiecarrière schreef hij alleen voor piano. Logisch, hij was een voortreffelijk pianist, net als zijn grote liefde, Clara Wieck. Na een Liederenjaar volgde een symfonisch jaar en een kamermuziekjaar. Als Schumann eenmaal de smaak te pakken krijgt, stort hij zich er helemaal op.
Zo ging het ook bij de Vioolsonates. Als hij in 1851 in vijf dagen de Vioolsonate nr. 1 in a, op. 102 componeert, begint hij meteen erna aan de Vioolsonate nr. 2 in d, op. 121. Kort daarna leert Schumann Johannes Brahms kennen, een jonge componist uit Hamburg. Schumann is diep onder de indruk en tussen de twee ontstaat een muzikale vriendschap. Voor hun gezamenlijke vriend, Joseph Joachim, op dat moment waarschijnlijk de grootste violist ter wereld, componeren de vrienden gezamenlijk een Vioolsonate met Joachims romantische motto ‘Frei Aber Einsam’ verstopt in de noten: de FAE-Sonate.

Paolo Giacometti is a Dutch pianist of Italian origin. As a soloist, he is widely acclaimed, and as an accompanist for violinists and cellists, he is among the absolute world’s best. It’s no wonder Pieter Wispelwey chooses Giacometti whenever possible; together they have made several highly acclaimed CD recordings. We, too, are huge fans: not a season goes by without inviting Giacometti.

Schumann and Brahms Violin Sonatas
Robert Schumann was a rather monomaniac. For the first twelve years of his composition career, he wrote only for piano. Understandably, he was an excellent pianist, just like his great love, Clara Wieck. After a Lieder year, a symphonic year followed, followed by a chamber music year. Once Schumann got a taste for it, he devoted himself entirely to it.
The same thing happened with the Violin Sonatas. When he composed the Violin Sonata No. 1 in A minor, Op. 102, in five days in 1851, he immediately began work on the Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 121. Shortly afterward, Schumann met Johannes Brahms, a young composer from Hamburg. Schumann was deeply impressed, and a musical friendship developed between the two. For their mutual friend, Joseph Joachim, at that time probably the greatest violinist in the world, the friends jointly composed a Violin Sonata with Joachim’s romantic motto ‘Frei Aber Einsam’ hidden in the notes: the FAE Sonata.
