Cappella Amsterdam zou zo maar eens het beste koor van Nederland kunnen zijn. Onder leiding van hun chefdirigent Daniel Reuss zingen ze Alfred Schnittke’s meesterlijke Boetepsalmen.
Rachmaninov door het jeugdkoor van Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam
In het voorprogramma zingt het jeugdkoor van Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam Rachmaninovs Zes Koren (1895). De componist schreef het werk voor de Mariïnsky meisjesschool, het is daarom geschreven voor hoge stemmen en piano. Zoals het jeugdkoor van Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam het zal uitvoeren is qua geluid helemaal zoals het door de componist bedoeld was.
Schnittke
Met zijn twaalf boetepsalmen schreef Schnittke muziek die door merg en been gaat. Toepasselijk; de psalmen staan in het teken van boetedoening voor straf en zonde. Voor zijn compositie koos Schnittke voor een kale toonzetting, waarbij de tekst centraal staat. Op het moment dat de tekst zich tot God richt, maakt de kaalheid plaats voor een weldadige warmte, alsof plotseling de zon doorbreekt.

Cappella Amsterdam just might be the best choir in the Netherlands. Under the direction of their chief conductor Daniel Reuss, they sing Alfred Schnittke’s masterly Boetepsalmen.
Rachmaninov by the youth choir of Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam
In the support act, the youth choir of Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam sings Rachmaninov’s Zes Koren (1895). The composer wrote this piece for the Mariïnsky girls’ school, so it was written for high voices and piano. The way this piece will be performed by the youth choir of Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam will therefore be exactly as intended by the composer.
Schnittke
With his twelve hymns, Schnittke has written music that cuts to the bone. Appropriate; the psalms are all about punishment and sin. For his composition, Schnittke opted for a bare tone setting, in which the text is central. The moment the text turns to God, the baldness gives way to a soothing warmth, as if the sun suddenly breaks through.
