De biografie van Daniel Rowland leest als een optelsom van verschillende musici. Zo had hij een bloeiende carrière als solist, die hem in Het Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall en de Royal Albert Hall brachten. Hij was primarius van het Allegri String Quartet, het Breitner Strijkkwartet en tot 2019 van het Brodsky Quartet. Hij was vaak te gast als concertmeester bij Londense orkesten als de Philharmonia en het BBC Symphony Orchestra en hij wordt geregeld uitgenodigd om kamerorkesten te dirigeren. Hij geeft les, is oprichter van het Stift Internationaal Muziekfestival, hij leidt ensembles die zich specialiseren in moderne muziek, waaronder Ensemble Contrechamps en Radius… Het is maar een kleine greep. En dan hebben we het vaste duo dat hij vormt met pianiste Natacha Kudritskaya nog niet eens genoemd. Veelzijdigheid is één ding, maar Rowland weet bij alles wat hij doet steeds de allerhoogste kwaliteit te bewaren, en dat is erg zeldzaam.
The French Connection
Parijs staat centraal in dit recital. Mozart componeerde er zijn Vioolsonate nr. 21, de enige in mineur, want zijn moeder was net overleden, en het verdriet van Mozart is erin te horen. César Franck was directeur van het Conservatorium van Parijs toen hij zijn Vioolsonate in A schreef. Het is een van de hoogtepunten van de vioolsonateliteratuur: meeslepend, romantisch en overtuigend. Ook Poulenc schreef een Parijse vioolsonate, maar haastte zich te zeggen dat het geen sonate is in de Franse traditie: ‘De sonate is heel anders dan de eeuwige ‘vioolmelodielijn’ van de Franse sonates uit de 19e eeuw… De viool-prima donna over piano-arpeggio’s doet me overgeven.’ Hoewel die uitspraak een grondige breuk doen vermoeden met Poulencs voorgangers, valt dat reuze mee, de muziek is heerlijk en toegankelijk. Gershwins Porgy & Bess Suite tot slot, is op en top Amerikaans. Maar Gershwin was zeer geïnspireerd door zijn collega’s uit Parijs en woonde er zelfs een tijdje. Hij wilde er bij Ravel in de leer, maar toen Gershwin dat bij een ontmoeting aan Ravel voorstelde reageerde die naar verluid: ‘waarom zou je een tweederangs Ravel willen worden als je een eersterangs Gershwin kan zijn?

Daniel Rowland’s biography reads like a summation of several musicians. For instance, he has a flourishing career as a soloist, which took him to The Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. He was primarius of the Allegri String Quartet, the Breitner String Quartet and, until 2019, of the Brodsky Quartet. He was a frequent guest concertmaster with London orchestras such as the Philharmonia and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and he is regularly invited to conduct chamber orchestras. He teaches, is founder of the Stift International Music Festival, he leads ensembles specialising in modern music, including Ensemble Contrechamps and Radius… It’s just a small sample of his musical activities. Next to all this, he regularly performs as a duo with pianist Natacha Kudritskaya. Versatility is one thing, but Rowland always manages to maintain the very highest quality in everything he does, which is very rare.
The French Connection
Paris is at the centre of this recital. Mozart composed his Violin Sonata No 21 there, the only one in minor. His mother had just died, and Mozart’s grief can be heard in it. César Franck was director of the Paris Conservatoire when he wrote his Violin Sonata in A major. It is one of the highlights of violin sonata literature: compelling, romantic and convincing. Poulenc also wrote a Paris violin sonata, but hastened to say that it is not a sonata in the French tradition: ‘The sonata is very different from the eternal “violin melody line” of 19th-century French sonatas… The violin prima donna over piano arpeggios makes me vomit.’ While that statement might suggest a profound departure from Poulenc’s predecessors, that is not too bad, the music is delightful and accessible. Finally, Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess Suite is thoroughly American. Gershwin, however, was highly inspired by his Parisian colleagues and even lived there for a while. He wanted to study there with Ravel, but when Gershwin suggested this to Ravel at a meeting, the latter reportedly responded: ‘why would you want to become a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?
