Tijdens dit concert klinkt er beeldende muziek, en is er muzikaal beeld: pianist en illustrator Thomas Beijer laat zich van zijn meest creatieve kant zien in dit visueel stimulerende concert met muziek van Albéniz en Moessorgski.
Iberia Suite
De Spaanse componist Isaac Albéniz componeerde zijn Iberia Suite tussen 1905 en 1909. Het 12-delige werk weerspiegelt de Spaanse cultuur, waarbij elk deel een ander aspect van de Spaanse cultuur belicht. De muziek bevat verschillende regionale muziekstijlen, zoals flamenco en volksmuziek. De Iberia Suite is een belangrijk voorbeeld van het Spaanse impressionisme en wordt vaak beschouwd als een van de hoogtepunten van Albéniz’ pianomuziek.
Beeldende muziek, of muziek in beeld?
Schilderijen van een tentoonstelling is een pianocyclus van Modest Moessorgski, geïnspireerd door schilderijen van de Russische kunstenaar Viktor Hartmann. Elk stuk vertegenwoordigt een schilderij, waarbij Moessorgski de beelden vertolkt door middel van muzikale thema’s en variaties. Pianist Thomas Beijer, die naast pianist ook een begenadigd illustrator is, maakt de cirkel rond door tijdens dit concert geanimeerde tekeningen van zijn hand te tonen, gebaseerd op de muziek van Moessorgski.

Pianist Thomas Beijer is een ware alleskunner. Hij speelt zowel soloconcerten als recitals, en kamermuziekconcerten met muzikale partners waaronder celliste Quirine Viersen, violiste Simone Lamsma en de zangeressen Barbara Kozelj en Laetitia Gerards. Sinds 2019 is Beijer directeur van de Young Pianist Foundation en in 2022 ontving hij de Nederlandse Muziekprijs, de hoogste onderscheiding die door het Ministerie van OCW wordt uitgereikt aan een Nederlands klassiek musicus.
Naast zijn werk op het podium is Beijer werkzaam als componist, schrijver en tekenaar. Zijn novelle Geen Jalapeños verscheen in 2017 bij Uitgeverij Prometheus en de tekeningen die tijdens dit concert getoond worden zijn door hem gemaakt. ‘Alles wordt anders met een stel zeekomkommers op een groot scherm. Of aardappelen’ aldus Beijer.

This concert features visual music and musical images: pianist and illustrator Thomas Beijer shows his most creative side in this visually stimulating concert featuring music by Albéniz and Mussorgsky.
Iberia Suite
Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz composed his Iberia Suite between 1905 and 1909. The 12-movement work reflects Spanish culture, with each movement highlighting a different aspect of Spanish culture. It incorporates various regional musical styles, such as flamenco and folk music. The Iberia Suite is an important example of Spanish impressionism and is often considered one of the highlights of Albéniz’s piano music.
Visual music, or music in pictures?
Pictures of an Exhibition is a piano cycle by Modest Mussorgsky, inspired by paintings by Russian artist Viktor Hartmann. Each piece represents a painting, with Mussorgsky interpreting the images through musical themes and variations. Pianist Thomas Beijer, who in addition to being a pianist is also a gifted illustrator, completes the circle by showing his own animations based on the music of Mussorgsky during this concert.

Pianist Thomas Beijer is a true all-rounder. He plays solo concerts as well as recitals, and chamber music concerts with musical partners including cellist Quirine Viersen, violinist Simone Lamsma and singers Barbara Kozelj and Laetitia Gerards. Since 2019, Beijer has been director of the Young Pianist Foundation and in 2022 he received the Dutch Music Prize, the highest award given to a Dutch classical musician by the Ministry of OCW.
In addition to his work on stage, Beijer works as a composer, writer and illustrator. His novella No Jalapeños was published by Prometheus Publishers in 2017, and the animations shown at this concert are his own. ‘Everything becomes different with a bunch of sea cucumbers on a big screen. Or potatoes,” Beijer said.
