Violist Shunske Sato en pianiste Shuann Chai zijn partners zowel op het podium als daarbuiten, en dat hoor je. In 2023 voerden ze alle Beethoven vioolsonates uit op authentieke instrumenten in de Aalmarktzaal, wat resulteerde in de opnames van een dubbel-CD met dit repertoire in 2024. Nu zijn ze terug, met een concert dat geheel gewijd is aan de muziek voor viool en piano van Prokofjev.
Kamermuziek ten tijde van oorlog
De sonates van Prokofjev voor viool en piano zijn twee prominente werken die de veelzijdigheid van Prokofiev’s muzikale stijl belichten. De vioolsonates, geschreven in de oorlogsperiode tussen 1938 en 1943, tonen Prokofievs kenmerkende modernistische benadering van harmonie en ritme, vermengd met lyrische melodieën en expressieve diepgang. Het eerste deel van de 1e sonate, met zijn donkere karakter en virtuoze passages, weerspiegelt de tumultueuze tijd waarin het werd gecomponeerd, terwijl het tweede deel een introspectieve sfeer creëert met melancholische melodieën. De tweede sonate in D schreef Prokofjev oorspronkelijk voor dwarsfluit en piano. De Russische vioolvirtuoos David Oistrakh was aanwezig bij de première en overtuigde Prokofjev de fluitpartij te bewerken naar een vioolpartij.
De 5 Mélodies voor viool en piano, gecomponeerd in 1920, tonen Prokofjevs meesterschap in het creëren van miniaturen vol poëzie en expressiviteit. Elke melodie duurt ongeveer 1,5 minuut en belicht verschillende facetten van emotie, variërend van weemoedig tot speels en virtuoos. Shunske Sato en Shuann Chai brengen in dit recital Prokofjevs innovatieve benadering van kamermuziek tot klinken en weten diepgaande emotie te verweven met technische virtuositeit.
Shunske Sato en Shuann Chai
De van oorsprong Japanse violist Shunske Sato is veelvuldig als solist, kamermusicus en concertmeester te horen. Hij is concertmeester van Concerto Köln en was tot 2023 artistiek leider en concertmeester van de Nederlandse Bachvereniging. Als gastconcertmeester was hij o.a. te horen bij het Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, het Orquestra Barocca de Sevilla en het Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in Noorwegen. Naast zijn werk op het podium is hij hoofdvakdocent barokviool aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Pianiste Shuann Chai is een veelgevraagd kamermusicus en soliste. Naast haar duo met Shunske Sato speelde ze met o.a. bariton Mattijs van de Woerd, het Dudok Kwartet en celliste Hidemi Suzuki. Het repertoire dat ze speelt varieert van vroege barok tot aan hedendaagse composities. Daarnaast werkt ze graag samen met artiesten uit andere kunstdisciplines.

Violinist Shunske Sato and pianist Shuann Chai are partners both on stage and off, and you can hear it. In 2023, they performed all the Beethoven violin sonatas on authentic instruments in the Aalmarkt Hall, resulting in the recording of a double-CD of this repertoire in 2024. Now they are back, with a concert entirely dedicated to Prokofiev’s music for violin and piano.
Chamber music in times of war
Prokofiev’s sonatas for violin and piano are two prominent works that highlight the versatility of Prokofiev’s musical style. The violin sonatas, written during the war period between 1938 and 1943, show Prokofiev’s characteristic modernist approach to harmony and rhythm, mixed with lyrical melodies and expressive depth. The first movement of the 1st sonata, with its dark character and virtuoso passages, reflects the tumultuous time in which it was composed, while the second movement creates an introspective atmosphere with melancholic melodies. Prokofiev originally wrote the second sonata in D major for flute and piano. Russian violin virtuoso David Oistrakh attended the premiere and convinced Prokofiev to adapt the flute part to a violin part. Ever since, this sonata is being widely performed by violinists all over the world.
The 5 Mélodies for violin and piano, composed in 1920, show Prokofiev’s mastery in creating miniatures full of poetry and expressiveness. Each melody lasts about 1.5 minutes and highlights different facets of emotion, ranging from wistful to playful and virtuosic. In this recital, Shunske Sato and Shuann Chai bring Prokofiev’s innovative approach to chamber music to life and manage to interweave profound emotion with technical virtuosity.
Shunske Sato and Shuann Chai
Originally from Japan, violinist Shunske Sato performs as a soloist, chamber musician and concertmaster. He is concertmaster of German baroque orchestra Concerto Köln and was artistic director and concertmaster of the Netherlands Bach Society until 2023. As guest concertmaster, he performed with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Barocca de Sevilla and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in Norway, among others. Besides his work on stage, he is principal study teacher in baroque violin at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Pianist Shuann Chai is a much requested chamber musician and soloist. Besides her duo with Shunske Sato, she has played with baritone Mattijs van de Woerd, the Dudok Quartet and cellist Hidemi Suzuki, among others. The repertoire she plays ranges from early baroque to contemporary compositions. She also enjoys collaborating with artists from other artistic disciplines.
