Het ongeëvenaarde Quartetto di Cremona zet twee beroemde zwanenzangen op het programma: Beethovens laatste strijkkwartet en Schuberts goddelijke Strijkkwintet in C. Voor dat laatste werk hebben zij de hulp ingeroepen van cellist Kyril Zlotnikov. De absolute top van de kamermuziek, dit concert!
Beethoven: Strijkkwartet nr. 16 in F op. 135
Beethovens laatste kwartetten staan bekend als briljante meesterwerken, maar moeilijk toegankelijk en complex. ‘De monologen van een dove componist’, worden ze wel genoemd. Maar zijn allerlaatste kwartet, het Strijkkwartet nr. 16 in F op. 135, is juist weer veel milder en evenwichtiger. Het langzame deel is van een onaardse schoonheid. Het Vivace zit vol ritmische verschuivingen en het slotdeel is een binnenpretje: hij verwerkte een canon die hij als grapje voor zijn vriend Ignaz Dembscher had geschreven. En zo eindigde Beethoven zijn laatste kwartet vlak voor zijn dood met een dikke glimlach.
Franz Schubert: Strijkkwintet in C
Voor Franz Schuberts Strijkkwintet in C, één van de hoogtepunten van de kamermuziek voegt cellist Kyril Zlotnikov zich bij het kwartet. Met dat monumentale eerste deel waarin Schubert emoties uit de krochten van zijn ziel lijkt te halen. En de onnavolgbaar tedere opening van tweede deel, met daarna dat donkere, getormenteerde B-gedeelte. Het vrolijke, bijna volkse scherzo, met dat prachtig serene trio. En dan de finale: één grote Weense dans, Hongaars gekruid. Het is allemaal van een muzikale perfectie die werkelijk ongeëvenaard is. Schubert was doodziek toen hij het kwintet componeerde en wist dat zijn ziekte ongeneeslijk was. Nog één keer lijkt Schubert terug te kijken op zijn turbulente leven, vol armoede en miskenning. Maar ook vol vriendschappen en schoonheid. Daarom klinkt van bitterheid geen spoor. Schubert treedt waardig en dapper de dood tegemoet, die hem twee maanden nadat hij dit slotakkoord opschreef na een lange lijdensweg eindelijk kwam halen.

Beethoven: String quartet nr. 16 in F op. 135
Beethoven’s last quartets are known as brilliant masterpieces, but difficult to access and complex. ‘The monologues of a deaf composer,’ they have been called. But his very last quartet, the String Quartet No. 16 in F op. 135, is, on the contrary, much milder and more balanced. The slow movement is of unearthly beauty. The Vivace is full of rhythmic shifts, and the final movement is an inside joke: he incorporated a canon he had written as a joke for his friend Ignaz Dembscher. And so Beethoven ended his last quartet just before his death with a big smile.
Franz Schubert: String quartet in C
For Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C, one of the highlights of chamber music, cellist Kyril Zlotnikov joins the quartet. With that monumental first movement in which Schubert seems to draw emotions from the depths of his soul. And the impeccably tender opening of second movement, followed by that dark, tormented B section. The joyful, almost folksy scherzo, with that beautifully serene trio. And then the finale: one great Viennese dance, Hungarian spiced. Schubert was deathly ill when he composed the quintet and knew his illness was incurable. One more time Schubert seems to look back on his turbulent life, full of poverty and misunderstanding. But also full of friendships and beauty. Therefore, there is no trace of bitterness. Schubert faces death with dignity and bravery, which finally came to him two months after he wrote down this final chord after a long ordeal.
