Het is inmiddels vaste prik in onze programmering: een recital door cellist Pieter Wispelwey en pianist Paolo Giacometti. Dat komt omdat hun concerten zijn steevast van het allerhoogste niveau zijn. Daarnaast vermoeden wij dat ons publiek klachtenbrieven gaat sturen als wij een Wispelwey/Giacometti-loos seizoen presenteren. De twee muzikale zielsverwanten komen met een prachtig Russisch programma met Sjostakovitsj’ Cellosonate in d als kern.
Sjostakovitsj
Het is dit jaar 50 jaar geleden dat Dmitri Sjostakovitsj overleed. Daarom besteden we dit jaar extra aandacht aan de componist. In zijn Cellosonate in d op. 40 zocht Sjostakovitsj naar eenvoud, transparantie, pakkende thema’s en klassieke vormen. Ondertussen zorgt hij er steeds voor dat dat nergens ten koste gaat van de originaliteit en de diepgang. De sonate barst van de ritmische kracht, lyriek en neoklassiek levendig plezier.
Oestvolskaja en Kabalevski
Galina Oestvolskaja was de enige vrouwelijke componist die werd toegelaten tot Sjostakovitsj’ compositieklas. Oestvolskaja was zeer eigengereid, haar muziek laat zich niet goed in een hokje vatten. ‘Er is hoe dan ook geen verband tussen mijn muziek en die van welke andere componist, levend of dood.’, zo vond ze zelf. Haar Grand Duet voor cello en piano is als het ware een symfonie voor twee instrumenten. Het is geschreven voor de beroemde cellist Mstislav Rostropovitsj. Dat laatste geldt ook voor de Cellosonate in Bes van Dmitri Kabalevski. Het is een krachtige achtbaan van emoties: intense somberheid en manische energie gaan hand in hand. Het tweede deel is een groteske danse macabre en het slotdeel een energiek perpetuum mobile. Wat een fantastische muziek!

It is now a regular feature in our programming: a recital by cellist Pieter Wispelwey and pianist Paolo Giacometti. That’s because their concerts are invariably of the very highest standard. Besides, we suspect that you, our audience, will start sending letters of complaint if we present a Wispelwey/Giacometti-less season. The two musical soulmates present a wonderful Russian programme with Shostakovich’s cello sonata in D minor at its core.
Shostakovich
2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death. Therefore, we are paying special attention to the composer this year. In his cello sonata in D minor op. 40, Shostakovich sought simplicity, transparency, catchy themes and classical forms. Meanwhile, he always makes sure that it is never at the expense of originality and depth. The sonata bursts with rhythmic power, lyricism and neoclassical lively fun.
Ulstvolskaya and Kabalevsky
Galina Ustvolskaya was the only female composer admitted to Shostakovich’s composition class. Ustvolskaya was highly idiosyncratic, her music cannot be easily pigeonholed. ‘In any case, there is no connection between my music and that of any other composer, living or dead,’ she told herself. Her Grand Duet for cello and piano is like a symphony for two instruments. It was written for the famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. The same goes for Dmitri Kabalevsky’s cello sonata in B-flat major. It is a powerful rollercoaster of emotions: intense gloom and manic energy go hand in hand. The second movement is a grotesque danse macabre and the final movement an energetic perpetuum mobile. What fantastic music!
