Het Orkest van de Achttiende eeuw en fortepianiste Olga Pasjtsjenko laten onder leiding van dirigent Bertie Baigent horen dat Clara Schumann – de vrouw van Robert Schumann – en haar zeven jaar oudere collega Emilie Mayer niet onderdeden voor de mannelijke componisten van hun tijd. Juist in een programma met Beethovens Coriolanus-ouverture en zijn Vierde Symfonie – een vergelijking waar elke componist het warm van zou krijgen – blijkt eens te meer hoe goed de muziek van deze twee dames is.
Clara Schumann en Emilie Mayer
Clara Schumann kenden we tot voor kort vooral als ‘vrouw van’. Maar inmiddels wordt ze ook zeer gewaardeerd als componist met een eigen stem, lyrisch en romantisch maar evenwichtiger dan haar man Robert. Emilie Mayer werd wel ‘de vrouwelijke Beethoven’ genoemd. En in die Weens-klassieke, vroeg romantische hoek moeten we haar ook zoeken. Maar ze is meer dan dat: haar stijl kenmerkt zich door complexe ritmes, plotselinge modulaties en een grote spanning. Fortepianiste Olga Pasjtsjenko en het fenomenale Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw zijn helemaal thuis in dit negentiende-eeuwse repertoire.
Beethovens Vierde en Coriolanus
De oneven symfonieën van Beethoven worden het vaakst gespeeld. Zo staat de Vierde Symfonie, in de woorden van Robert Schumann, ‘als slanke Griekse maagd tussen twee Noorse goden.’ Dat de Vierde niet wat vaker klinkt is een absolute omissie, zo bewijst het Orkest van de Achttiende eeuw ons onder leiding van Bertie Baigent. De symfonie begint fluisterend en schoorvoetend, maar al snel voeren zonnige, opgewekte en krachtige klanken de boventoon. De ouverture Coriolanus staat net als de Vijfde Symfonie in c-klein, een toonsoort die Beethoven bewaarde voor zijn meest extraverte en emotionele composities: stormachtig, heroïsch en dramatisch.

Conducted by Bertie Baigent, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and fortepianist Olga Pashchenko show that Clara Schumann – Robert Schumann’s wife – and her seven-year older colleague Emilie Mayer were no less than the male composers of their time. Precisely in a program that includes Beethoven’s Coriolanus Overture and his Fourth Symphony – a comparison that would make any composer warm up to him – it becomes clear once again how good the music of these two ladies is.

Until recently, we knew Clara Schumann mainly as the ‘wife of’. But now she is also highly appreciated as a composer with a voice of her own, lyrical and romantic but more balanced than her husband Robert. Emilie Mayer has been called ’the female Beethoven’. And in that Viennese-classical, early romantic corner we should also look for her. But she is more than that: her style is characterized by complex rhythms, sudden modulations and great tension. Fortepianist Olga Pashchenko and the phenomenal Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century are completely at home in this nineteenth-century repertoire.
Beethovens Fourth and Coriolanus
Beethoven’s odd symphonies are played most often. Thus the Fourth Symphony stands, in Robert Schumann’s words, ‘as a slender Greek maiden between two Norse gods.’ That the Fourth does not appear more often is an absolute omission, as the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century proves to us under the baton of Bertie Baigent. The symphony begins whispery and reluctant, but soon sunny, cheerful and powerful sounds prevail. The overture Coriolanus, like the Fifth Symphony, is in c minor, a key Beethoven kept for his most extroverted and emotional compositions: stormy, heroic and dramatic.
