Na het grote Brahmsproject richt Johannes Leertouwer zijn pijlen sinds het seizoen 24-25 op de muziek van Robert Schumann. Na de Tweede symfonie en het Vioolconcert zijn nu de Derde symfonie en het Pianoconcert aan de beurt, gespeeld door het jonge Orkest als Laboratorium en pianist Olga Pashchenko.
Schumann volgens Leertouwer
Hoe klonk de muziek van de componisten van wie we zo houden en die we zo goed denken te kennen eigenlijk toen die net gecomponeerd was? Het lijkt een eenvoudige vraag, zelfs een beetje een open deur. Maar die vraag blijkt enorm veel nieuwe vragen op te werpen: van welk hout waren de dwarsfluiten toen gesneden? Speelden ze op natuurhoorns of op ventielhoorns? Hielden ze een strak tempo aan, of was het juist vloeiend?
Dirigent en violist Johannes Leertouwer stort zich na een jarenlang Brahms-project dat hem een doctorstitel opleverde, sinds het seizoen 24-25 helemaal op de muziek van Schumann. En die kan dat wel gebruiken. Want ook al zijn de symfonieën van Schumann zeer geliefd, critici klagen nogal eens over een gebrek aan balans tussen de instrumenten. Het zou heel goed kunnen dat dat alles te maken heeft met het instrumentarium dat tegenwoordig gebruikt wordt. Leertouwers projecten leveren opzienbarende resultaten en concerten op.
Schumanns Derde Symfonie en pianoconcert
Na een reis door het Rijnland componeerde Robert Schumann zijn Derde symfonie, bijgenaamd ‘de Rheinische’. Tijdens het componeren schreef hij aan zijn uitgever dat de rivier de Rijn door zijn gedachten stroomde en dat is te horen. Dat hij zich drie jaar later in dezelfde Rijn probeerde te verdrinken, is in deze levenslustige muziek niet te horen.
Ook het Pianoconcert in a is krachtig en levenslustig, maar ook liefdevol en teder. Dat zal alles te maken hebben met Schumanns vrouw Clara, de fabelachtige pianiste die het werk in première bracht. Het hoogromantische concerto is een ware publiekslieveling.
Olga Pashchenko
Het Leidsch Dagblad jubelde: ‘Olga danst over de toetsen.’ Wij sluiten ons daar volledig bij aan, want wat een feest weet fortepiano-specialist Olga Pashchenko er altijd weer van te maken. Samen met Leertouwer kan dit niet anders dan een romantisch, historisch geïnformeerd feest worden.

After the great Brahms project and since the season 24-25, Johannes Leertouwer has been setting his sights on the music of Robert Schumann. After the Second Symphony and the Violin Concerto, it is now the turn of the Third Symphony and the Piano Concerto, played by the young Orchestra as a Laboratory and pianist Olga Pashchenko.

What did the music of the composers we love so much and think we know so well actually sound like when it was just composed? It seems a simple question, even a bit of an open door. But that question turns out to raise an enormous number of new questions: what wood were flutes cut from back then? Did they play on natural horns or valve horns? Did they keep a tight tempo, or was it fluid?
Conductor and violinist Johannes Leertouwer, after a year-long Brahms project that earned him a doctoral degree and since season 24-25, he has thrown himself entirely into Schumann’s music. And the latter could use it. Because even though Schumann’s symphonies are much loved, critics often complain about a lack of balance between the instruments. It could very well be that that has everything to do with the instrumentation used today. Leertouwer’s projects produce startling results and concerts.
Schumann’s Third Symphony and Piano Concerto
After a trip through the Rhineland, Robert Schumann composed his Third Symphony, nicknamed “the Rheinische. While composing, he wrote to his publisher that the river Rhine flowed through his mind, and it can be heard. That he tried to drown himself in the same Rhine three years later cannot be heard in this sprightly music.
The Piano Concerto in a is also powerful and sprightly, but also loving and tender. That will have everything to do with Schumann’s wife Clara, the fabulous pianist who premiered the work. The high-romantic concerto is a true audience favorite.
