Het is een jaarlijkse Leidse traditie: de Nieuwe Philharmonie onder leiding van Johannes Leertouwer speelt in de dagen voor kerst een intieme uitvoering van dit meesterwerk in de Grote Zaal.
De Messiah
De Messiah van George Frideric Handel is een klassieker in het oratoriumgenre dat fascineert en ontroert sinds het voor het eerst werd uitgevoerd in 1742. Het stuk, geschreven voor orkest, koor en zangsolisten, vertelt het verhaal van de profetieën, geboorte, lijden, opstanding en verheerlijking van Jezus Christus zoals verteld in de Bijbel.
De Messiah zit vol met emotie en dramatiek: van tedere en ontroerende aria’s tot de volklinkende koordelen. De kleuren en texturen van de instrumentatie, samen met het gebruik van contrapunt en harmonie, dragen bij aan de diepte en muzikale rijkdom van dit meesterwerk. Ondanks de christelijke achtergrond van dit werk beroert de tijdloze boodschap van hoop, vreugde en verlossing publiek van alle achtergronden en heeft het een onuitwisbare plaats ingenomen in de canon van de klassieke muziek.
Een intieme uitvoering
Violist en dirigent Johannes Leertouwer brengt de Messiah in een intieme versie ten tonele: de zangers nemen samen zowel de solopartijen als de koorstukken voor hun rekening. Geflankeerd door een klein bezet orkest dat speelt op historische instrumenten zorgt dit ervoor dat de muziek rechtstreeks bij het publiek binnenkomt.
De Nieuwe Philharmonie
De Nieuwe Philharmonie is een projectorkest waarin ‘side-by-side’ musiceren centraal staat: ervaren professionals, jonge professionals en studenten spelen op gelijkwaardige manier samen. Het orkest fungeert als een laboratorium, waarin resultaten van historisch onderzoek worden uitgeprobeerd en worden omgezet in klank. Dit zorgt voor een bijzondere muziekbeleving, voor zowel het publiek als de musici.

The Messiah
George Frideric Handel’s Messiah is a classic of the oratorio genre that has fascinated and moved audiences since it was first performed in 1742. Written for orchestra, choir and vocal soloists, the piece tells the story of the prophecies, birth, suffering and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Messiah is full of emotion and drama: from tender and moving arias to full-sounding choruses. The colours and textures of the instrumentation, along with the use of counterpoint and harmony, contribute to its depth and musical richness. Despite the religious background of this work, its timeless message of hope, joy and redemption moves audiences all around the world and has taken an indelible place in the canon of classical music.
An intimate performance
Violinist and conductor Johannes Leertouwer leads the Messiah in an intimate rendition: the singers together take on both the solo parts and the choral pieces. Accompanied by a small orchestra playing on historical instruments, this ensures that the music touches the audience right in their hearts.

De Nieuwe Philharmonie is a project orchestra centered around ‘side-by-side’ music-making: experienced professionals, young professionals and students play together on equal terms.
