Sinds violist Michael Foyle het Nederlands Vioolconcours won, heeft zijn carrière een enorme vlucht genomen. Naast concerten in de mooiste zalen en met de beste musici, werd hij hetzelfde jaar nog de jongste Professor ooit bij de Royal Academy of Music in London. Maar het gaat ons natuurlijk om zijn vioolspel. De Strad omschreef dat als ‘vol sprankelende details, met tonale schoonheid en doortastende ritmische helderheid, verstand en poëzie combinerend.’ Waarvan akte. Al meer dan tien jaar vormt Foyle een duo met de Estse pianist Maksim Štšura. Samen stuwen ze elkaar tot grote hoogte, dat blijkt wel uit de vele lovende recensies van hun cd’s en concerten. Zo kreeg hun Beethoven-cd 5 sterren van BBC Music Magazine.
Brahms: Vioolsonates nr. 2 en 3
Net als zijn eerste vioolsonates schreef Brahms zijn volgende twee vioolsonates voor zijn vriend Joseph Joachim, een van de beroemdste violisten van hun tijd. De tweede sonate lijkt in veel opzichten op de eerste, ze delen een lyrische sfeer, de muziek is intiem. De derde sonate is van een andere orde: grootser, universeler. Niet voor niets voegde hij een vierde deel toe, waar de andere sonates er maar drie hebben. Het is alsof Brahms zijn eerste twee sonates voor uitvoeringen in de huiskamer schreef, en de derde voor de concertzaal. Het is muziek met spierballen, maar ook hier deze sonate zit boordevol heerlijke melodieën en bijna pijnlijk mooie harmonieën.

Since violinist Michael Foyle won the Dutch Violin Competition, his career has soared. In addition to concerts in the finest halls and with the best musicians, he became the youngest Professor ever at the Royal Academy of Music in London in the same year. But what matters to us, of course, is his violin playing. The Strad described that as ‘full of sparkling detail, with tonal beauty and incisive rhythmic clarity, combining wit and poetry.’ Duly noted. For more than a decade, Foyle has formed a duo with Estonian pianist Maksim Štšura. Together they push each other to great heights, as evidenced by the many rave reviews of their CDs and concerts. Brahms: Violinsonates nr. 2 and 3
Like his first violin sonatas, Brahms wrote his next two violin sonatas for his friend Joseph Joachim, one of the most famous violinists of their time. The second sonata resembles the first in many ways; they share a lyrical mood, the music is intimate. The third sonata is of a different order: grander, more universal. Not for nothing did he add a fourth movement, where the other sonatas have only three. It is as if Brahms wrote his first two sonatas for performances in the living room, and the third for the concert hall. It is music with muscle, but again this sonata is packed with delightful melodies and almost painfully beautiful harmonies.
