Wij kunnen geen genoeg van haar krijgen, want na een overweldigend concert met B’rock in 2023 en een sensationeel recital met pianist Aaron Wajnberg in 2022, keert de stersopraan terug met een prachtig, afwisselend en zeer origineel recital, wederom begeleid door pianist Aaron Wajnberg.
Britten, Hahn en Burleigh
De Engelsman Benjamin Britten componeerde een sensuele Liedcyclus op gedichten van Arthur Rimbaud: Les Illuminations. Het is kleurrijke en pakkende muziek. Dat geldt ook voor Douze Rondels van Reinaldo Hahn. Deze in Venezuela geboren, als kind naar Frankrijk geëmigreerde componist ontwikkelde zich na les te hebben gehad van Massenet en Gounod tot een van de meest Franse componisten van zijn tijd. Reinaldo Hahn was Flamboyant en erudiet, en dat is te horen in deze liederen. Harry Burleigh is een naam die weinig luisteraars zullen herkennen. Zijn invloed op de Amerikaanse muziekgeschiedenis is echter enorm: zo liet hij Antonín Dvořák én Amerikaanse tijdgenoten kennis maken met de Afro-Amerikaanse muziek. Zelf verwerkte hij die invloeden in zijn composities, waarvan vooral de liederen van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit zijn. Dat heeft er alles mee te maken dat Burleigh zelf een vermaard bariton was. Een kleurrijk programma met een breed scala aan muzikale stijlen, met liederen die een ding delen: ze zijn beeldschoon.

Englishman Benjamin Britten composed a sensual Song cycle set to poems by Arthur Rimbaud: Les Illuminations. It is colourful and catchy music. So is Douze Rondels by Reinaldo Hahn. Born in Venezuela and emigrated to France as a child, this composer developed into one of the most French composers of his time after being taught by Massenet and Gounod. Reinaldo Hahn was flamboyant and erudite, and this can be heard in these songs. Harry Burleigh is a name few listeners will recognise. However, his influence on American music history is enormous: for instance, he introduced Antonín Dvořák as well as American contemporaries to African-American music. He himself incorporated these influences into his compositions, of which the songs in particular are of exceptional quality. This has everything to do with the fact that Burleigh himself was a renowned baritone. A colourful programme with a wide range of musical styles, with songs that share one thing: they are beautiful.
