Lean On Me: A Tribute to Bill Withers met Jeangu Macrooy
Jeangu Macrooy, een ‘volbloed soulzanger’ zegt Trouw, brengt een eerbetoon aan Bill Withers samen met het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Met zijn warme stem brengt hij Ain’t No Sunshine en Lean on Me tot leven.

Het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw en Jeangu Macrooy slaan de handen ineen voor een eerbetoon aan de legendarische soulzanger en songwriter Bill Withers. Withers, die in 2020 overleed, werd bekend met nummers als Lean on Me, Ain’t No Sunshine, Use Me en Lovely Day. Jeangu Macrooy brengt deze tophits tot leven. Jeangu vertelt: ‘Ik vind het oeuvre van Bill Withers enorm inspirerend. Ik kan dan ook niet wachten om mij samen met het geweldige Jazz Orchestra te laten onderdompelen in zijn artisticiteit’.

Ook voor de musici van het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertbouw is Bill Withers een grote inspiratie. In nieuwe bigband-arrangementen vol improvisaties zullen ze nieuwe lagen van betekenis toevoegen aan Withers’ invloedrijke oeuvre. Het JOC behoort tot de absolute top van bigbands in Europa en won meerdere Edison Awards. ‘Een bijzonder mooi bigbandalbum, zoals die helaas nog maar weinig gemaakt worden’ schreef de Volkskrant over het nieuwste album Threnody uit 2022. Volgens Jazzenzo is het ‘Een prachtig album waarmee het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw zijn internationale kwaliteit volledig onderschrijft’.

The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and Jeangu Macrooy join forces for a tribute to legendary soul singer and songwriter Bill Withers. Withers, who died in 2020, became known for songs like Lean on Me, Ain’t No Sunshine, Use Me and Lovely Day. Jeangu Macrooy brings these chart-topping hits to life. Jeangu says: ‘I find Bill Withers’ oeuvre hugely inspiring. So I can’t wait to immerse myself in his artistry together with the wonderful Jazz Orchestra’.

Bill Withers is also a great inspiration for the musicians of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. In new bigband-arrangements full of improvisations, they will add new layers of meaning to Withers’ influential oeuvre. The JOC is among the absolute top bigbands in Europe and has won several Edison Awards. ‘A particularly beautiful bigband album, the likes of which are sadly made very rarely anymore’ wrote de Volkskrant about the latest 2022 album Threnody. According to Jazzenzo, it is ‘A beautiful album with which the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw fully endorses its international quality’.
