De contrabas mag maar zelden eens op de voorgrond treden. Daar zit – of sta – je dan als bassist… Maar de ondernemende James Oesi brengt daar verandering in. Deze contrabassist maakte een heel programma met muziek van onder meer Dvořák, Brahms en Gershwin rond zijn instrument. Je hoort romantische en swingende muziek en werk van Afro-Amerikanen. Vaak werden de componisten door volksmuziek geïnspireerd.
Gevoelig
‘Een gevoelige musicus, goed op de hoogte, die veel heeft om te delen,’ zei zijn collega Gary Karr, een wereldberoemd bassist. ‘Heb je zo iemand als James Oesi, dan weet je wat je hebt, het klinkt en de bas wordt een solo-instrument,’ aldus Hans Haffmans, presentator bij NPO Radio 4. Oesi was te zien en te horen bij televisieprogramma’s als Podium Witteman en Vrije Geluiden en mag zich de oprichter en artistiek leider noemen van het Dutch Double Bass Festival, het eerste festival in zijn soort ter wereld.
Volksmuziek
Dvořáks beroemde Humoreske, Brahms’ Hongaarse dansen waarin de componist zich op zijn toegankelijkst en luchtigst toont, hoor je nu op de bas. Idem de Three preludes, compacte, swingende werkjes van Gershwin. Dvorák, Brahms, Gershwin zijn drie componisten die veel hadden met volksmuziek, die kleurde hun composities warm. Ook spelen Oesi en zijn duo-partner drie Afro-Amerikanen: Florence Price, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor en William Grant Still.
Toegankelijk
James Oesi wordt begeleid door de Nederlandse pianiste Djuwa Mroivili, die klassieke muziek graag toegankelijker maakt voor een groot publiek. Over de componiste Florence Price die, mogelijk vanwege haar donkere huidskleur, in de vorige eeuw weinig erkenning kreeg, vertelt ze: ‘Toen ik ruim een jaar geleden het werk van Price ontdekte, was dat belangrijk voor me. Ik had voor het eerst het gevoel: deze componist wil dat ik haar werk speel en ik mag alles van mijzelf daarin leggen.’

The contrabass is rarely even allowed to come to the forefront. That’s where you sit – or stand – as a bassist…. But the entrepreneurial James Oesi is changing that. This contrabassist created an entire program of music by Dvořák, Brahms, Gershwin and others around his instrument. You’ll hear romantic and swinging music and work by African-Americans. Quite often the composers were inspired by folk music.
Sensitive
‘A sensitive musician, well informed, who has a lot to share,’ said his colleague Gary Karr, a world-renowned bassist. ‘When you have someone like James Oesi, you know what you have, it sounds and the bass becomes a solo-instrument,’ said Hans Haffmans, presenter at NPO Radio 4. Oesi has been seen and heard on television programs such as Podium Witteman and Vrije Geluiden and may call himself the founder and artistic director of the Dutch Double Bass Festival, the first festival of its kind in the world.
Folkmusic
Dvořák’s famous Humoreske, Brahms’ Hungarian dances in which the composer shows himself at his most accessible and lighthearted, can now be heard on bass. Ditto the Three preludes, compact, swinging little works by Gershwin. Dvorák, Brahms, Gershwin are three composers who had an affinity for folk music, which colored their compositions warmly. Oesi and his duo partner also play three African-Americans: Florence Price, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and William Grant Still.
Accessible
James Oesi is accompanied by Dutch pianist Djuwa Mroivili, who likes to make classical music more accessible to a wide audience. Regarding composer Florence Price who, possibly because of her dark skin color, received little recognition in the last century, she says, ‘When I discovered Price’s work over a year ago, it was important to me. I had the feeling for the first time: this composer wants me to play her work and I get to put all I have in it.’
