Het fenomenale Spaanse Cuarteto Quiroga speelt, naast het strijkkwartet van Jonathan Dove Togetherness, een van de allermooiste strijkkwartetten uit de negentiende eeuw: het Eerste Strijkkwartet van Brahms. Daarnaast begeleidt het kwartet de Turks-Oostenrijkse tenor Ilker Arcayürek in In Damascus van Dove, een hartverscheurend ingetogen requiem voor Syrië en haar inwoners.
Brahms Strijkkwartet nr. 1
Johannes Brahms was een perfectionist. Voordat hij zijn Strijkkwartet nr. 1 in c op. 51/1 voltooide, gooide hij het ene na het andere strijkkwartet-poging in het haardvuur. Meer dan twintig werken sneuvelden voordat hij uit de schaduw van zijn grote voorbeeld Beethoven kon treden. Maar dan heb je ook wat. Het bouwplan van Brahms’ eerste strijkkwartet is zeer groots opgezet en ook de brede, volle klank die Brahms de slechts vier strijkers weet te ontlokken is grandioos. De buitenste delen zijn zeer stuwend, onrustig, intens en vol emotionele diepgang. Het langzame tweede deel – een prachtige Romanze met lang uitgesponnen melodieën – geeft de nodige respijt. Een waar meesterwerk.
Jonathan Dove: In Damascus
Eind jaren ’90 bezocht de Britse componist Jonathan Dove Syrië. Hij was onder de indruk van Palmyra en genoot toen hij in Damascus ‘van de lawaaierige moderne metropool de magische oude wereld van de ommuurde oude stad binnenstapte: de levendige soek die naar de prachtige moskee leidt, en een labyrint van kronkelende, smalle straatjes gevuld met de geur van ongezuurd brood.’ Met zijn aangrijpende liedcyclus ‘In Damascus’ bezingt hij dat Damascus en treurt hij om het lot van de mensen die hij ontmoette en de plaatsen die hij ooit bezocht en die vernietigd zijn in een vreselijke oorlog.

This concert is a collaboration with Stringquartet Biënnale Amsterdam
Along with Jonathan Dove Togetherness string quartet, the phenomenal Spanish Cuarteto Quiroga plays one of the very finest string quartets of the nineteenth century: Brahms’ First String Quartet. In addition, the quartet accompanies Turkish-Austrian tenor Ilker Arcayürek in Dove’s In Damascus, a heartbreakingly subdued requiem for Syria and its people.
Brahms String quartet nr. 1
Johannes Brahms was a perfectionist. Before he completed his String Quartet No. 1 in c op. 51/1, he threw one string quartet attempt after another into the fire. More than twenty works perished before he could step out of the shadow of his great role model Beethoven. But then again, the result was something. The construction plan of Brahms’ first string quartet is very big, and the broad, full sound Brahms manages to elicit from the mere four strings is also grandiose. The outer movements are very propulsive, restless, intense and full of emotional depth. The slow second movement – a beautiful Romanze with long drawn-out melodies – gives the necessary respite. A true masterpiece.
Jonathan Dove: In Damascus
In the late 1990s, British composer Jonathan Dove visited Syria. He was impressed by Palmyra and delighted when in Damascus he stepped from the noisy modern metropolis into the magical ancient world of the walled old city: the lively souk leading to the magnificent mosque, and a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets filled with the smell of unleavened bread. His touching song cycle ‘In Damascus’ sings of that Damascus and mourns the fate of the people he met and the places he once visited that were destroyed in a terrible war.
