Candida Thompson is als artistiek leider van Amsterdam Sinfonietta kind aan huis in de Stadsgehoorzaal. Nu komt ze niet met haar strijkersschare, maar met toppianist Alexander Gavrylyuk. Samen zetten zij muziek voor viool en piano van Robert en Clara Schumann, Brahms en Szymanowski op de lessenaars.
Dit concert stond oorspronkelijk op donderdag 29 januari gepland, maar is verplaatst naar zaterdag 31 januari.

Robert en Clara Schumann, Brahms en Szymanowski
Het echtpaar Robert en Clara Schumann vormde halverwege de negentiende eeuw de spil van het Duitse muziekleven. Robert Schumanns kleurrijke romantische muziek waarin verschillende emoties elkaar snel afwisselen, is al meer dan anderhalve eeuw onverminderd populair. De muziek van zijn vrouw Clara leren we nu pas weer opnieuw kennen. En dat wordt tijd, want in haar tijd was zij de beroemdste van de twee. Zo vroeg Prins Frederik, de broer van Koning Willem II bij een bezoek van Robert en Clara aan Den Haag in 1853 aan Robert of hij óók muzikaal was. Maar puur vanwege haar vrouw zijn, is haar muziek na haar dood een voetnoot geworden. Hoe onterecht dat is, kunt u tijdens dit concert zelf horen. Naast muziek van beide Schumanns staat ook Brahms’ prachtige Tweede vioolsonate op het programma. Brahms was Robert Schumanns protégé, en raakte zeer goed bevriend met Clara, na Roberts dood trok hij zelfs tijdelijk bij haar in om te helpen met het huishouden en de kinderen. Een mooie intieme muzikale driehoek dus, dit concert.
De Poolse componist Karol Szymanovski borduurde verder op de muziek van deze drie grote componisten. Hij is vooral beroemd vanwege zijn twee vioolconcerten en een aantal andere virtuoze, frisse en levendige stukken. Zijn muziek is verfijnd en impressionistisch, virtuoos, maar heeft de virtuositeit niet tot doel, eerder als uiting van muzikale ideeën. Zijn Mythes zijn een absoluut hoogtepunt in zijn oeuvre.

As artistic director of Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Candida Thompson is right at home in the Stadsgehoorzaal. Now she comes not with her string ensemble, but with top pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk. Together they will put music for violin and piano by Robert and Clara Schumann, Brahms and Szymanowski on the lecterns.
This concert was originally scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29, but has been rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31.

Robert and Clara Schumann, Brahms and Szymanowski
The couple Robert and Clara Schumann formed the hub of German musical life in the mid-nineteenth century. Robert Schumann’s colorful romantic music in which different emotions rapidly alternate has been undiminished in popularity for more than a century and a half. We are only now getting to know his wife Clara’s music again. And it’s about time, because in her day she was the more famous of the two. For example, when Robert and Clara visited The Hague in 1853, Prince Frederik, King William II’s brother, asked Robert if he too was musical. But purely because of her being a woman, her music became a footnote after her death. How unjust that is, you can hear for yourself in this concert. In addition to music by both Schumanns, the program includes Brahms’ beautiful Second Violin Sonata. Brahms was Robert Schumann’s protégé, and became very good friends with Clara; after Robert’s death he even moved in with her temporarily to help with the household and the children. A nice intimate musical triangle, then, this concert.
Polish composer Karol Szymanovski elaborated on the music of these three great composers. He is especially famous for his two violin concertos and a number of other virtuosic, fresh and lively pieces. His music is sophisticated and impressionistic, virtuosic, but does not aim at virtuosity, rather as an expression of musical ideas. His Myths are an absolute highlight of his oeuvre.
