Calefax stelt zijn muzikale menu altijd zorgvuldig samen: ditmaal schotelt het rietkwintet je Gershwin, Dvořák en Debussy voor. Prachtige, lichtvoetige klassieke muziek waarmee Calefax zich al eerder bewees. Maar het zou zomaar kunnen dat er nog wat bij komt, of verandert, want graag presenteren de mannen van Calefax juist ook hun meest recente vondsten.
Klarinetsolo
De beroemdste klarinetsolo ooit? Die waarmee Gershwin zijn Rhapsody in Blue begint. Met een schitterende, trage glissando sleept hij je de bruisende metropool binnen die New York in de jaren 1920 was. Het kolkt er, het kookt er, het sist er, het… swingt er (een woord dat in die jaren werd uitgevonden). Muziek die een stem gaf aan een generatie, die van de ‘Roaring twenties’. Amerikaanser dan je zou denken is Dvořáks Kwintet. De Tsjech Dvořák leefde een poos in Amerika toen hij directeur was van het conservatorium in New York. Hij snoof er de nieuwe onbekende klanken op die de jazz al aankondigden. Resultaat waren de beroemde symfonie ‘Uit de Nieuwe Wereld’ en het ‘Amerikaanse strijkkwartet’. Maar daar bleef het niet bij, ook dit Kwintet vloeide nog uit zijn pen. Toch is ook zijn geboortegrond Bohemen nooit ver want Dvořák had daar in de States flink heimwee. Oorspronkelijk voor vijf strijkers, klinkt het op blaasinstrumenten al even mooi.
Wat de westenwind zag
Debussy is een meester in stemmingen. In zijn Preludes voor piano, hier mooi voor blazers bewerkt, weet hij de meest verfijnde sferen op te roepen. Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l’air du soir: de klanken en geuren dwarrelen door de avondlucht. Ce qu’a vu le vent d’ouest: Wat de westenwind heeft gezien. Of beelden, zoals Les fées sont d’exquises danseuses: feeën zijn de meest exquise danseressen. Des pas sur la neige: voetstappen in de sneeuw. La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune: het terras van het door maanlicht beschenen publiek. En zo schreef hij zijn 24 preludes, waaruit Calefax rietkwintet een keus maakt.

Calefax always carefully composes its musical menu: this time the reed quintet is serving up Gershwin, Dvořák and Debussy. Beautiful, light-footed classical music with which Calefax has proven itself before. But it could just be that something more is added, or changed, because the men of Calefax like to present their most recent discoveries.
Clarinetsolo
The most famous clarinet solo ever? The one with which Gershwin begins his Rhapsody in Blue. With a brilliant, slow glissando, he drags you into the bustling metropolis that was New York in the 1920’s. It churns there, it boils there, it hisses there, it … swings there (a word invented in those years). Music that gave a voice to a generation, that of the ‘Roaring twenties’. The Dvořák’s QuintetMore is more American than you might think. Czech Dvořák lived in America for a while when he was director of the New York Conservatory of Music. There he sniffed out the new unknown sounds that were the early heralds of jazz. This resulted in the famous symphony ‘From the New World’ and the ‘American String Quartet.’ But that was not all, this Quintet also flowed from his pen. Yet even his native Bohemia is never far as Dvořák was quite homesick there in the States. Originally for five strings, it sounds equally beautiful on wind instruments.
What the west wind has seen
Debussy is a master of tunings. In his Preludes for piano, here beautifully arranged for wind instruments, he manages to evoke the most refined moods. Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l’air du soir: the sounds and scents swirl through the evening air. Ce qu’a vu le vent d’ouest: What the west wind has seen. Or images, such as Les fées sont d’exquises danseuses: fairies are the most exquisite dancers. Des pas sur la neige: footsteps in the snow. La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune: the terrace of the moonlit audience. And so he wrote his 24 preludes, from which Calefax reed quintet chooses.
