De roaring twenties: een muzikale en culturele bloeiperiode tussen twee wereldoorlogen in. Glitter en glamour staat lijnrecht tegenover onheil dat nadert én vers in het geheugen staat gegrift. Een spreekwoordelijke dans op de vulkaan, ongeveer 100 jaar geleden, die verdacht veel weg heeft van de huidige tijd. Het Berlage Saxophone Quartet en zangers Karin Strobos en Martijn Cornet brengen in deze voorstelling een keur aan liederen uit dit woelige interbellum: het tijdperk van de opkomende jazz, bigbands en natuurlijk de opmars van de saxofoon. George Gershwin, Cole Porter en Kurt Weill passeren de revue in arrangementen van Wijnand van Klaveren. Het saxofoonkwartet klinken als bigband, orkest en ‘barpiano’ in één, waarbij ze alle denkbare klankkleuren uit hun instrumenten toveren. Choreograaf en regisseur Pim Veulings ensceneerde het geheel in een ongedefinieerde periode. Crises zijn van alle tijden, en onze reacties daarop lijken beangstigend veel op elkaar: kop in het zand steken en al feestend de afgrond in. Verwacht een feestelijke voorstelling met een duister randje over naderend onheil en hoe wij mensen daarmee omgaan. Mensch, Feier!
Berlage Saxophone Quartet
Het Berlage Saxophone Quartet (BSQ) wordt gezien als voorvechter van een nieuwe generatie saxofoonkwartetten die deze discipline binnen de klassieke muziekwereld stevig op de kaart zet. Opvallend is daarbij de unieke combinatie van muzikale diepgang en verfijning, aangevuld met een aansprekende presentatie waarin andere disciplines de muzikale lading versterken.
Opgericht in 2008 in de klas van Arno Bornkamp op het Conservatorium van Amsterdam, wonnen ze een Stipendium op de Deutscher Musikwettbewerb (2011), de Dutch Classical Talent Award (2013) en de Kersjes Prijs (2015). Het hoogst haalbare niveau in kamermuziek nastrevend, gingen ze in de leer bij één van de beste strijkkwartetten ter wereld: het Artemis Quartett in Berlijn. Hun drie cd’s SaxoFOLK, In search of freedom en Goldberg Variations uitgebracht bij het Duitse label MDG ontvingen veel lof van de binnen- en buitenlandse pers.

The roaring twenties: a musical and cultural heyday between two world wars. Glitter and glamour are diametrically opposed to disaster that is both approaching and fresh in the memory. A proverbial dance on the volcano, about 100 years ago, that looks suspiciously like the present time. In this performance, the Berlage Saxophone Quartet and singers Karin Strobos and Martijn Cornet perform a selection of songs from this turbulent interwar period: the era of emerging jazz, big bands and, of course, the rise of the saxophone. George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Kurt Weill pass in review in arrangements by Wijnand van Klaveren. The saxophone quartet sound like big band, orchestra and “barpiano” all in one, conjuring every imaginable timbre from their instruments. Choreographer and director Pim Veulings staged the whole thing in an undefined time period. Crises are of all times, and our reactions to them are frighteningly similar: burying our heads in the sand and partying into the abyss. Expect a festive performance with a dark edge about impending doom and how we humans deal with it.

Berlage Saxophone Quartet
The Berlage Saxophone Quartet (BSQ) is seen as the champion of a new generation of saxophone quartets that is putting this discipline firmly on the map within the classical music world. Striking is the unique combination of musical depth and refinement, complemented by an appealing presentation in which other disciplines reinforce the musical charge.
Founded in 2008 in Arno Bornkamp’s class at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, they won a Stipendium at the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb (2011), the Dutch Classical Talent Award (2013) and the Kersjes Prize (2015). Pursuing the highest attainable level in chamber music, they apprenticed with one of the best string quartets in the world: the Artemis Quartet in Berlin. Their three CDs SaxoFOLK, In search of freedom and Goldberg Variations released by the German label MDG received high praise from the domestic and foreign press.
