Eroïca: Eerste pianotrio, Derde Symfonie & op. 70/2
Het Linos Trio opent met Beethovens allereerste compositie die hij een opusnummer durfde te geven: het Pianotrio nr. 1 opus 1. Hoewel het nog sterk in de traditie van Haydn en Mozart staat, is de ambitie van Beethoven duidelijk merkbaar: met vier delen van een voor dat moment grote schaal, is het geen kinderspel van de toen 23-jarige componist. De heroïek, een thema dat in het door oorlogen geteisterde Europa veelbesproken was, druipt er vanaf. Dat geldt al helemaal voor de Derde symfonie, bijgenaamd ‘Eroïca’. Begonnen als eerbetoon aan volksheld Napoleon, schrapte Beethoven diens naam krachtig uit de partituur nadat Napoleon zichzelf tot keizer had gekroond. Voor Beethoven was Napoleon held-af, het was blijkbaar toch eigenbelang dat hem dreef. De Derde symfonie werd daarom geen oude aan Napoleon, maar aan de heroïek zelf.
Linos Piano Trio
Misschien kent u ze al van het voorgaande seizoen: het Londense Linos Piano Trio. Zij spelen niet alleen het ‘ijzeren pianotrio-repertoire’, maar eigenen zich ook noten toe die niet voor hun bezetting geschreven zijn. Zo ‘hertalen’ ze iconische orkestwerken alsof ze oorspronkelijk voor pianotrio zijn geschreven. Daarmee gaan ze met hun bewerkingen een stap verder dan gebruikelijk.
Het weekend van vr 23 jan t/m zo 25 jan gaat het Linos Piano Trio volledig op in de muziek van Beethoven. Van zijn allereerste compositie – het Pianotrio op. 1 nr. 1 tot zijn laatste officiële pianotrio, het Aartshertogtrio op. 97. Maar ook de finale uit de Derde symfonie ‘Eroica’ klinkt, net als delen uit de Tweede symfonie. In drie concerten met de titels Heroïek, Sturm und Drang en Heilig en profaan geven ze een unieke blik op het oeuvre van Ludwig van Beethoven en spelen ze een aantal van zijn mooiste stukken.

Eroica: First Piano Trio, Third Symphony & op. 70/2
The Linos Trio opens with Beethoven’s very first composition that he dared to give an opus number: the Piano Trio No. 1 opus 1. Although still very much in the tradition of Haydn and Mozart, Beethoven’s ambition is evident: with four movements of a grand scale for the time, it is no child’s play from the then 23-year-old composer. The heroism, a theme that was much talked about in war-ravaged Europe, drips off. This is especially true of the Third Symphony, nicknamed “Eroica. Begun as a tribute to folk hero Napoleon, Beethoven forcefully deleted his name from the score after Napoleon had crowned himself emperor. For Beethoven, Napoleon was hero-af, it was apparently self-interest that drove him after all. The Third Symphony therefore became not an old one to Napoleon, but to heroism itself.
Linos Piano Trio
You may already know them from the previous season: the London-based Linos Piano Trio. They not only play the “iron piano trio repertoire,” but also appropriate notes not written for their instrumentation. Thus, they “retranslate” iconic orchestral works as if they were originally written for piano trio. In doing so, they take their arrangements a step further than usual.
This weekend, the Linos Piano Trio is completely immersed in the music of Beethoven. From his very first composition – the Piano Trio op. 1 No. 1 to his last official piano trio, the Archduke Trio op. 97. But the finale from the Third Symphony “Eroica” will also be heard, as well as parts from the Second Symphony. In three concerts [left: on Friday Jan. 23, Saturday Jan. 24 and Sunday Jan. 25, 2026] with the titles Heroic, Sturm und Drang and Sacred and Profane, they will give a unique look at Ludwig van Beethoven’s oeuvre and play some of his finest pieces.
