The Indian Queen is Purcells intrigerende laatste opera. Tijdens een historisch gezien onmogelijke oorlog tussen Peru en Mexico, speelt zich een verboden liefdesgeschiedenis af tussen de Peruaanse Indian Queen en een Mexicaanse generaal. Het werk bevat enkele van Purcells mooiste aria’s – zoals het verstilde I attempt from Love’s Sickness to Fly en de majestueuze hymne You twice ten hundred deities – muziek die het hart van barokliefhebbers sneller doet kloppen.
BarokOpera Amsterdam brengt dit verhaal opnieuw tot leven in een actuele context. In de regie van de Braziliaanse Ligiana Costa (Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, Théâtre du Châtelet in Parijs, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence) wordt de open ruimte in deze onvoltooide opera gevuld met verhalen van voorouders en eigen ervaringen van Zuid-Amerikanen die zich in Nederland hebben gevestigd. Purcells barokmuziek wordt verrijkt met muziek en inheemse klanken uit Abya Yala, de inheemse naam voor het Amerikaanse continent.

The Indian Queen is Purcell’s intriguing final opera. During a historically impossible war between Peru and Mexico, a forbidden love story unfolds between the Peruvian Indian Queen and a Mexican general. The work features some of Purcell’s most beautiful arias—such as the serene *I attempt from Love’s Sickness to Fly* and the majestic hymn *You twice ten hundred deities*—music that makes the hearts of Baroque lovers beat faster.
BarokOpera Amsterdam brings this story back to life in a contemporary context. Directed by the Brazilian Ligiana Costa (Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence), the empty space in this unfinished opera is filled with stories of ancestors and personal experiences of South Americans who have settled in the Netherlands. Purcell’s Baroque music is enriched with music and indigenous sounds from Abya Yala, the indigenous name for the American continent.
