Drie vrouwelijke componisten op één concertprogramma! Men speurde ijverig in de archieven, gaf graag toe aan een gezonde drang naar avontuur. Drie jonge, de podia stormenderhand veroverende musici van Nederlandse bodem en een Amerikaanse pianist brengen met groot plezier de drie toonaangevende vrouwen voor het voetlicht.
Drie vrouwen
Allereerst Clara Schumann (1819-1896). Hoewel het idee dat zij zich als componiste liet verdrukken door haar echtgenoot Robert Schumann nergens op slaat, bleef ze toch als componiste in de schaduw. Het kleine oeuvre van de vrouw die ook één van de grootste pianistes van de 19e eeuw was, is zeker de moeite. Na haar nam onder meer de Ierse Rebecca Clarke (1852-1924) de componeerpen ter hand. Van haar hoor je het werk Epilogue. De derde vrouw, een Afro-Amerikaanse woonachtig in Chicago, is Florence Price (1887-1953). Een musicoloog schreef over haar: ‘Volgens haar dochter had ze eigenlijk arts willen worden maar merkte ze dat de moeilijkheden om in die tijd een vrouwelijk arts te worden te groot waren. In plaats daarvan werd ze een nog grotere zeldzaamheid: een vrouwelijk componist van symfonieën.’
Uniek kamermuziekwerk
Zijn Pianokwartet – één deel maar – is het enige kamermuziekwerk van Mahler dat we nog hebben. Hij was pas 16 toen hij het schreef, conservatoriumstudent. Het lijkt meer op Schumann dan op de Mahler die vooral bekend staat om zijn symfonieën. Dit is de dwepend gevoelige muziek van een geniale romantische puber. De Franse romanticus Fauré was ook nog niet zo oud toen hij zijn Pianokwintet schreef: 33. Het is één van zijn toegankelijkste werken. Met hier een hoofdrol voor de pianist Ben Kim, over wie de Berliner Morgenpost schreef: ‘Hij behoort tot de selecte groep wier spel meer is dan briljante toetsenmagie en prettig, aangenaam geluid.’ Violist Niek Baar, altvioliste Dana Zemtsov en celliste Ella van Poucke behoren tot een nieuwe generatie Nederlandse musici en maken van dit afwisselende programma zeker iets moois.

Three women composers in a single concert program! One searched diligently in the archives, gladly giving in to a healthy urge for adventure. Three young, storming Dutch musicians and an American pianist are delighted to present the three tone-pushing women.
Three women
First, Clara Schumann (1819-1896). Although the idea that she allowed herself to be oppressed as a composer by her husband Robert Schumann makes no sense, she still remained in the shadows as a composer. The small oeuvre of the woman who was also one of the greatest pianists of the 19th century is certainly worthwhile. After her, the Irish Rebecca Clarke (1852-1924), among others, took up composing. From her you will hear the work Epilogue. The third woman, an African-American living in Chicago, is Florence Price (1887-1953). A musicologist wrote of her, ‘According to her daughter, she had actually wanted to become a doctor but found that the difficulties of becoming a woman doctor at that time were too great. Instead, she became an even greater rarity: a female composer of symphonies.’
Unique chamber music
His Piano Quartet – one movement only – is Mahler’s only remaining chamber music work. He was only 16 when he wrote it, a conservatory student. This is the rousingly sensitive music of a brilliant romantic adolescent. The French romantic Fauré was also not that old when he wrote his Piano Quintet: 33. It is one of his most accessible works. With a starring role here for pianist Ben Kim, about whom the Berliner Morgenpost wrote, ‘He belongs to the select group whose playing is more than brilliant keyboard magic and pleasant, pleasing sound’. Violinist Niek Baar, violist Dana Zemtsov and cellist Ella van Poucke belong to a new generation of Dutch musicians and are sure to make this varied program into something wonderful.
