Contrastrijker kunnen de twee romantische kamermuziekwerken niet zijn. Het pianokwartet van Brahms loopt over van hartstocht, en pijn van een onbevredigde liefde. De componist wilde het werk dan ook publiceren met een illustratie die verwijst naar Goethes ‘Het lijden van de jonge Werther’ waarin de hoofdpersoon zelfmoord pleegt vanwege zijn liefde voor de vrouw van een vriend. En dan Schuberts Forellenkwintet: veertig minuten tomeloze vreugde, geen wolkje aan de lucht. Het wemelt van prachtige melodieën, het is pure lyrische uitbundigheid. Hier schittert elk instrument, zelfs de contrabas doet mee.

The two Romantic chamber music works could not be any more contrasting. Brahms’ piano quartet overflows with passion, and pain from an unsatisfied love. So the composer wanted to publish the work with an illustration referring to Goethe’s ‘The Suffering of Young Werther’ in which the protagonist commits suicide because of his love for a friend’s wife. Then there was Schubert’s Trout Quintet: forty minutes of unbridled joy, not a cloud in the sky. It flutters with beautiful melodies, it is pure lyrical exuberance. Here every instrument shines, even the contrabass joins in.
