Het Strijkkwintet in C van Schubert wordt gezien als een van de grootste meesterwerken uit de kamermuziek. Een van zijn meest diepgaande en emotioneel rijke composities voltooide Schubert het vlak voor zijn overlijden in 1828, op 31-jarige leeftijd. De toevoeging van een extra cello – in plaats van de gebruikelijke tweede altviool – geeft het werk een warme, diepe klank. Ongeveer net zo oud als Schubert leverde Johannes Brahms zijn eerste strijksextet af. Met nog een illustere carrière voor zich toont de jonge Brahms in dit werk al een volledig rijp meesterschap. Het getuigt van zijn uitzonderlijke beheersing van structuur, harmonie en melodie, terwijl het tegelijkertijd persoonlijke emoties blootlegt.

Schubert’s String Quintet in C is considered one of the greatest masterpieces in chamber music. One of his most profound and emotionally rich compositions, Schubert completed it just before his death in 1828 at the age of 31. The addition of a second cello (instead of the usual second viola) gives the work a warm, deep sound. Almost the same age as Schubert, Johannes Brahms completed his first string sextet, showcasing the young Brahms’ fully developed mastery. The work reflects his exceptional control of structure, harmony, and melody, while also revealing personal emotions.
