Alexander Warenberg
Alexander Warenberg is een van de meest interessante jonge cellisten van dit moment. Als jong talent won hij een reeks belangrijke concoursen, waaronder het Nationaal Cello Concours in 2016. Hij bleef daarna doorgroeien en doorstuderen. Onder andere aan de Kronberg Academy, dé kweekschool van internationale topcellisten. Warenberg speelt als solist inmiddels op veel grote internationale podia. In 2019 verscheen zijn eerste cd bij kwaliteitslabel TRPTK, met daarop cellosonates van Rachmaninov en Sjostakovitsj. Samen met pianist Nikola Meeuwsen duikt hij in de cellomuziek van drie van de grootste componisten van de 19e eeuw.
Nikola Meeuwsen
Pianist Nikola Meeuwsen is net zo’n ‘rising star’ als Alexander Warenberg. Hij studeerde bij Enrico Pace – die hier op 30 maart die andere cellosonate van Brahms begeleidde – en in april 2020 verscheen zijn debuut-cd, onderdeel van het talenttraject ‘AVROTROS Klassiek presenteert!’. NRC schreef drie jaar geleden: ‘De 16-jarige pianist Nikola Meeuwsen bewees in de Vierde Sonate van Skrjabin waarom hem de Concertgebouw Young Talent Award toekomt. Moeiteloos riep hij de betovering en vervoering van de sterrennacht op waardoor de componist zich liet inspireren.’
Mendelssohn, Brahms & Schubert
Mendelssohn, Brahms en Schubert zijn drie van de meest geliefde componisten van de romantiek. Felix Mendelssohn haalde eigenhandig de muziek van Bach uit de vergetelheid: hij was de eerste die de Matthäus Passion weer uitvoerde. Dat hij Bachs muziek goed bestudeerd heeft is duidelijk hoorbaar in het prachtige Adagio, vol Bach-verwijzingen. Mendelssohn was ook een vurig pleitbezorger van de muziek van Franz Schubert. Schubert dreigde na zijn vroege dood in de vergetelheid te raken, maar daar stak Mendelssohn gelukkig een stokje voor. Schubert componeerde geen muziek voor cello en piano, hij schreef D 821 voor het obscure strijkinstrument Arpeggione, een soort kruising tussen cello en gitaar. Maar cellisten hebben de sonate volledig toegeëigend. En terecht, want de muziek klinkt prachtig op de cello. Brahms’ tweede cellosonate is een groots en grootschalig werk, en laat prachtig horen hoe rijp en ervaren de oude Brahms schreef.

Alexander Warenberg
Alexander Warenberg is one of the most interesting young cellists today. As a young talent he won a series of important competitions, including the Nationaal Cello Concours in 2016. Afterwards he continued to grow and continued his studies. The Kronberg Academy was one of these school, the training center for international top cellists. Warenberg now performs as a soloist on many major international stages. In 2019 his first CD was released by quality label TRPTK, containing cello sonatas by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich. Working together with pianist Nikola Meeuwsen, he delves into the cello music of three of the greatest composers of the 19th century.
Nikola Meeuwsen
Pianist Nikola Meeuwsen is just as much a rising star as Alexander Warenberg. He studied with Enrico Pace – who accompanied Brahms’s other cello sonata here on 30 March – and his debut CD was released in April 2020, part of the talent trajectory ‘AVROTROS Klassiek presenteert!’. Three years ago, NRC wrote: ‘The 16-year-old pianist Nikola Meeuwsen proved in Skrjabin’s Fourth Sonata why he deserves the Concertgebouw Young Talent Award. He effortlessly evoked the enchantment and rapture of the starry night, which inspired the composer.’
Mendelssohn, Brahms & Schubert
Mendelssohn, Brahms and Schubert are three of the most beloved romantic composers. Felix Mendelssohn single-handedly brought Bach’s music out of obscurity: he was the first to perform the Matthäus Passion again. It is clear that he studied Bach’s music well when you listen to the beautiful Adagio, full of Bach references. Mendelssohn was also an ardent advocate of Franz Schubert’s music. Schubert was in danger of being forgotten after his early death, but Mendelssohn luckily put a stop to that. Schubert did not compose music for cello and piano, instead he wrote D 821 for the obscure string instrument Arpeggione, a cross between cello and guitar. But cellists have completely appropriated the sonata. And rightly so, because the music sounds beautiful on the cello. Brahms’ second cellosonate is a grand work, and shows perfectly how full of experience the old Brahms’ was in his writing.
