Lezing: Emotions and Acting

Emoties zijn essentieel voor theater. Theatermakers streven ernaar om emoties bij hun publiek op te roepen, en het publiek verwacht op zijn beurt iets te voelen tijdens de voorstelling. In de oudheid al draaide alles in het theater om emoties. Maar waar gaat het dan precies over? En hoe zit het met de emoties van acteurs, op en naast de bühne? Twee onderzoekers, een uit de sociale psychologie en een uit de theaterwetenschap, bespreken wat emoties zijn, wat het betekent om ze tot uitdrukking te brengen, hoe we emoties van anderen kunnen begrijpen en hoe acteren dit proces kan beïnvloeden.

Film: Nosferatu. A Symphony of Horrors (1922)

Nosferatu (1922), een van de bekendste stomme films, viert dit jaar zijn honderdjarig bestaan. De krachtige, expressionistische stijl van de film heeft zijn vermogen om het publiek te charmeren en angst in te boezemen niet verloren. Het verhaal is gebaseerd op de roman Dracula van Bram Stoker, maar vertelt zijn eigen perverse verhaal over psychologische horror en seksuele disfunctie, die in schril contrast staan met de ‘normaliteit’ van de burgerlijke Biedermeier-samenleving. De emotionele lading van de film wordt tijdens OverActing versterkt en ondersteund door de livemuziek van de pianiste Olga Pashchenko. De partituur, die Jed Wentz speciaal voor haar maakte, bestaat uit meesterwerken van componisten als Mendelssohn, Liszt en Chopin en wordt uitgevoerd op een historische piano.

Een mix van theater en muziek, wetenschap en kunst, emotie en verstand. Met theatervoorstellingen, lezingen, spoken word performances en workshops gaat OverActing op zoek naar de kracht van theatertradities uit het verleden, van stille films tot Griekse tragedies. De heftige gebaren, poses en gezichtsuitdrukkingen van honderd jaar geleden kunnen we niet meer begrijpen, laat staan ervan genieten. Of toch wel? We nemen je mee op een overrompelende emotionele reis langs acteerstijlen die nu verloren lijken. Confronterend? Misschien. Spannend? Absoluut! Na dit festival kijk je met nieuwe ogen naar het theater van nu.

Emotions are central to theatrical events. Artists strive to arouse them in the audience, and the audience in turn expects to feel them throughout the performance. Since antiquity, they have been the universal currency of the theatre: we all have emotions. But do we actually understand what emotions are? And is there something peculiar about the actor’s emotion, on and off the stage? In this talk, two researchers, from the fields of social psychology and theatre history, will discuss what emotions are, what it means to express our emotions, and how we can understand other people’s emotions, all the while exploring how the practice of acting might influence these processes.

Film: Nosferatu. A Symphony of Horrors (1922)

One of the most famous silent films, celebrates its centenary this year. The film’s powerful, expressionistic visual style has not lost its ability to frighten audiences today. It is based on Bram Stocker’s novel Dracula, but tells its own perverse tale of psychological horror and sexual dysfunction, strongly contrasted with the ‘normalcy’ projected by Biedemeier bourgeois society. With his unrivalled eye for poetic and atmospheric images, Murnau invites us to look ‘with horror into the secrets of nature’. The emotional charge of the film will be heightened, during our OverActing festival, by the performance of master-pianist Olga Pashchenko, who will perform the soundtrack – compiled especially for her by Jed Wentz from masterworks by composers like Mendelssohn, Liszt and Chopin – on an historical piano by Blüthner from 1865.
