Strauss en Sjostakovitsj

Richard Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder en Dmitri Sjostakovitsj’ Achtste symfonie schelen maar vijf jaar, maar roepen scherp contrasterende klankwerelden op. Met Strauss’ Vier letzte lieder (1948), op gedichten van Joseph von Eichendorff en Hermann Hesse, wordt de luisteraar meegevoerd naar een wereld van lyrische, laat-romantische melancholie en berusting. Heel anders gaat het eraan toe bij Sjostakovitsj: hij schreef zijn Achtste symfonie in 1943 en het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat hierin echo’s doorklinken van zijn andere grote ‘oorlogs’-symfonie, de Zevende. Subtiel roept het eerste deel een atmosfeer vol dreiging op. Dan barst de strijd los: bombardementen, verzet en soms een glimmer hoop klinken door in de volgende delen.

CvA Symfonieorkest

Het Conservatorium van Amsterdam is één van de meest toonaangevende conservatoria van Europa. Vanuit de hele wereld auditeren studenten om een begeerde opleidingsplek aan dit instituut te verkrijgen. Binnen hun opleiding doen de klassieke muziekstudenten orkestervaring op in het CvA Symfonieorkest, waarbij ze op projectbasis in heel korte tijd een symfonisch programma instuderen en uitvoeren. Een concert van het CvA Symfonieorkest bijwonen is dé gelegenheid om kennis te maken met de volgende generatie klassiek toptalent, dat vol vuur laat horen wat ze in huis hebben.

Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony were composed just five years apart, yet they evoke sharply contrasting soundscapes. Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder (1948), set to poems by Joseph von Eichendorff and Hermann Hesse, transports the listener to a world of lyrical, late-Romantic melancholy and resignation.

Things are quite different with Shostakovich: he wrote his Eighth Symphony in 1943, and it is therefore not surprising that echoes of his other great ‘war’ symphony, the Seventh, resound throughout. The first movement subtly evokes an atmosphere of impending doom. Then the battle erupts: bombardments, resistance and, at times, a glimmer of hope resound through the following movements.

New work by a composition student from the CvA will be included in the programme. Further details will follow.

The Conservatorium van Amsterdam is one of the leading conservatories in Europe. Students from all over the world audition to secure a coveted training place at this institution. As part of their studies, classical music students gain orchestral experience in the CvA Symphony Orchestra, where they rehearse and perform a symphonic program on a project basis in a very short time.
