Quartetto di Cremona
Het Quartetto di Cremona speelt in de huidige samenstelling al twintig jaar op het allerhoogste niveau en het kwartet viert dit jaar zijn vijfentwintigjarig bestaan. Het kwartet wordt geroemd om de eigengereide interpretaties en wonderschone klank. Quartetto di Cremona ontstond in de Italiaanse plaats Cremona, de bakermat van de vioolbouwkunst, waar bouwers als Stradivari en Amati hun nog steeds onovertroffen instrumenten maakten. De twee violisten spelen op een Amati en een Guadagnini, de bejubelde klank van het kwartet is mede daaraan te danken. Het Quartetto di Cremona is met prijzen overladen en overal waar zij spelen loopt pers en publiek met ze weg. Zo schreef The Strad na een concert in de prestigieuze Londsense Wigmore Hall: ‘Dynamic contouring was as sleek and elegant as an Armani suit, and it tailored the music to perfection.’

Het Strijkkwartet op. 77/1 in G is Haydns laatste strijkkwartet. Gecomponeerd aan de vooravond van de negentiende eeuw is het een briljant werk dat zowel vooruitwijst naar Beethoven, als teruggrijper op de barok. De vloeiende afwisseling van texturen is kenmerkend voor Haydns Weense stijl. Sprankelend contrapunt wordt afgewisseld met homofone passages en dramatische unisono’s. Virtuoze solo’s gaan over in vraag-en-antwoordspel, dat zich uitkristalliseert in canons en stemmenspel die herinneren aan de late barok. Toch is het zeer moderne muziek voor zijn tijd: we horen de jonge Beethoven al aankomen.
Griegs eerste, en enige voltooide strijkkwartet, valt stilistisch bezien tussen de late kwartetten van Beethoven en het Strijkkwartet van Debussy. Toch is het op en top Noors: we horen de geest van de Hardangerviool, het beroemde Noorse volksinstrument tussen de nobele strijkersklanken doorklinken.
Brahms Eerste Strijkkwartet is symfonisch opgezet en de brede, volle klank die hij de slechts vier strijkers weet te ontlokken is grandioos. De buitenste delen zijn zeer stuwend, onrustig, intens en vol emotionele diepgang. Daartussenin brengen de prachtige Romanze en het scherzo een melancholisch licht.

Quartetto di Cremona
The Quartetto di Cremona, in its current lineup, has been performing at the highest level for twenty years, and the quartet is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. The quartet is praised for its idiosyncratic interpretations and stunning sound. Quartetto di Cremona originated in Cremona, Italy, the cradle of violin making, where makers such as Stradivari and Amati created their still-unrivaled instruments. The two violinists play an Amati and a Guadagnini, and the quartet’s acclaimed sound is partly due to this. The Quartetto di Cremona has been showered with awards, and wherever they perform, they are adored by both press and audiences. For example, after a concert at London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall, The Strad wrote: “Dynamic contouring was as sleek and elegant as an Armani suit, and it tailored the music to perfection.”

The String Quartet 0p. 77/1 in G major is Haydn’s last string quartet. Composed on the eve of the nineteenth century, it is a brilliant work that both anticipates Beethoven and harks back to the Baroque. The fluid alternation of textures is characteristic of Haydn’s Viennese style. Sparkling counterpoint alternates with homophonic passages and dramatic unisons. Virtuoso solos give way to call-and-response play, crystallizing in canons and voice-play reminiscent of the late Baroque. Yet it is very modern music for its time: we can already hear the young Beethoven approaching.
Grieg’s first, and only completed, string quartet falls stylistically between Beethoven’s late quartets and Debussy’s String Quartet. Yet it is quintessentially Norwegian: we hear the spirit of the Hardanger fiddle, the famous Norwegian folk instrument, resonating among the noble string tones.
Brahms’s First String Quartet is symphonically structured, and the broad, full sound he elicits from just four strings is magnificent. The outer movements are very driving, restless, intense, and full of emotional depth. In between, the beautiful Romance and the scherzo bring a melancholic light.
